Giving up the longsword for the rapier is meh on damage average imo. I love the visual of being a weapon master dealing a thousand paper cuts with blade flashing dodging parrying evading the slower BBGs
personally im always very careful and sceptical about allowing UA stuff it often lead to what i call "snowflake characters"
i did however play around with a monk/fighter inspired wardancer concept and kensai just have the mechanics to make a longsword or greatsword wielding agile warrior
while the kensai does work alone the fighter adds some deadlyness in the champion or versatility in the battlemaster both of which fits rather nicely with the theme
alternatively the sword college bard could add a magic touch if you are so inclined
I understand you being unlikely to allow UA content, if you don't have a good group that makes alot of sense, but this subclass is out of UA, its been play-tested and is official content. All the other classes / sub classes have gone through this process be it internal or external.
I see nothing mechanically wrong with this subclass, is there something specific you don't like?
mostly its the japanese theme of the class which have no place in my world... so if im running a game with people who are unfamiliar with the world they might be inclined to make a "samurai or ninja style" character which fits poorly into the world as it is atm.
but as i said the mechanics are awesome for something like a "war dancer" warhammer fantasy style which fits alot better

I misunderstood you originally. I thought you were saying that as it had been in UA it was forever unusable.

It's not UA anymore... i'm confused by this post
Also just cause you pigeon holed kensei monks into a Japanese theme doesn't make it forced. It's not that hard to put a character who devotes himself to the mastery of a weapon into any world... ((barring that world being a world with 0 weapons I guess))
I think Humans make for the best Kensei Monk
Agile Parry + Defensive Duelist = Tank

kensei is official
all UA are official changes as far as i know doesnt really change how i feel about it
No, UA content is unofficial until it makes it into a book, and there's always changes from the UA version when it does.
still doenst matter
So if it was released in a PDF for testing at some point you swear off it?
seems legit
no im sceptical about letting people use it
you are focussed onthe wrong thing here... its not about my table... its aobut the monk subclass

The monk has been in D&D since the beginning. Perhaps you need to expand your world.

That's totally up to the DM, no one has to play in a group.
I misunderstood you originally. I thought you were saying that as it had been in UA it was forever unusable.
problem with allowing anything is that unless your world already supports the theme or class etc, imo it will feel forced and misplaced
It's not really an issue I've experienced but I can understand how in certain settings it could be very disruptive.

did you even read it?
Sedge made a polite request, which has not been heeded.
I have now locked this thread to prevent this discussion further spiralling into unpleasantness.
