I am going to be making a oath of Conquest paladin and I am wondering if I should use a sword and shield with Shield Master or a polearm with Polearm Master. I will also be using dragonborn and taking the race feat for the fear.
I'd recommend Shield Master, since the reaction has nice synergy with Aura of Protection and the bonus action with Aura of Conquest. If you knock a frightened opponent prone, they won't be able to get back up.
@Efficientlaziness, most people would think that a level of Hexblade is awesome, especially if you're going all the way from level 1 to level 20, since you don't have to max out Str for damage, you can just focus all your ASIs or feats into Cha. However, if you're playing a level 20 one-shot, I'd go with Invincible Conqueror. Having that against a Tarrasque or something huge will make a bigger difference that a slightly better mod for your attack and damage rolls.
Thanks LTCalvery, that's really helpful. I am designing my character for a normal campaign, so I will take a level of Hexblade, but now I wonder, at which point should I take the level of Hexblade? Which level?
I like it at level 2, so that you can immediately start gaining the benefit of higher Cha bonuses, BUT some people would say to take it as your eighth level, so that you can get to the Aura of Conquest faster (or whatever the paladin 7th level ability is). I'd say it depends on if your Cha is way higher than your Str, or if they're about the same. If the former, go level 2. If the latter, get Hexblade at level 8.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I actually like Paladin 17/Warlock 3, because you can make your Pact of the Blade weapon a polearm, and combine PAM and Sentinel if you're going for that sort of build. But 19/1 is also good, and I wouldn't even be opposed to 16/4 if you grab your Hexblade levels early, that way you aren't missing out on a feat

Thanks, I am also going to take resilient Con, so my saves will be through the roof
I have another question about Oath of Conquest, is it Invincible Conqueor worth it or should I take a level of Hexblade?
