That makes sense for a high velocity pellet spread from gunpowder what about a single low velocity slug?
A shotgun slug has a higher muzzle velocity than the individual pellets in birdshot or buckshot, not a lower one. You're referring to "manstoppers", and they're called that for a reason.

Actually I was referring to the pellet fired from a pellet crossbow - compared to a shotgun slug or buckshot load it would be a low velocity (considerably lower) slug with no spread. The wood flechettes would have a spread (I'm thinking of them as effectively mini wooden stakes to take out vampires)
The Suicide Squad's Ratcatcher 2 is, I think, one of the best examples of a Swarmkeeper Ranger ever put to film.
That is all.
Miss Hamlin was great but Hank Pym / Scott Lang had the swarm pick him up and carry him. Not just the single ant but the raft in the water pipe comes to mind. Ratcatcher 2 swarm was more just go bite that.

Yes, AND/OR, the conjure animals spell as a druid with a set theme of only one animal type, which I do on a regular basis. That was an awful lot of rats. Perhaps she is a level 13 or level 17 druid. Shepherd druid, of course.
Thanks to the new Strixhaven book, my dreams of RAW creating a water-bending Ranger are now a reality. The Quandrix Student background gives you access to both Strixhaven Initiate and an expanded Quandrix spell list. Through Strixhaven Initiate, you can get access to Create and Destroy Water (and Frost Fingers and Ice Knife.) Meanwhile, Quandrix Student adds Control Water to your spell list. Combine that with Rangers already getting access to Fog Cloud, and perhaps a Horizon Walker/Fey Wanderer for Misty Step, and you can make a pretty cool coastal or deep sea Ranger.
This is significant to me since Water is my favorite classical element and Rangers are my favorite DnD class, so being able to combine them both is a dream come true.
In related news, Quandrix Student also adds Vortex Warp to the Ranger's spell list, which is really cool for Horizon Walkers who enjoy more and more teleport options.

If you can get a DM to agree to a background that gives you spells....
I've never been at a table with Ranvica backgrounds so I generally don't feel like they are a legit option for most campaigns unless you are in a Strixhaven/Ranvica setting
To be honest, it's never been a problem for me and my tables. The DMs I play with are really good about allowing official options, sometimes with a bit of reflavoring. In fact, one of them had already given me permission to retroactively change my background once Strixhaven came out. Another just adds things like the Dragonmark Houses or Strixhaven to their homebrew settings because of how easy they are to transplant.
That being said, I am very much aware that I am the exception and not the rule.

Are you the exception though? I think anyone that doesn’t play DDAL has a DM like yours. And even DDAL has some rebuilding options. I think you’re being humble. 🙂
Thats fair if it works for you group but there is little to deny that the background is just straight up better than the PHB backgrounds....it gives you a feat and lets you add spells freely.
I would suggest your DM allow it for the other players as well to even things out but I think its fine if everyone agrees to it.

He did tho. He allowed all players to switch to Strixhaven backgrounds if they so chose. Most aren't because we actually like our backgrounds. Some are.

So if a gloomstalker was fighting a monster in darkness that rely on darkvision, would the gloomstalker be invisible even after attacking?
This is correct. Yes.
Also a gloomstalker. I do NOT get what all of the fuss is about.

So, Astral Elf Horizon Walker when?
Thoughts on PCs having other creature types now (maybe)?
Ooze, construct, undead, etc.
