hoping for some feedback on an idea about a member of the priesthood of Oghma that uses his thief’s skills to search out and acquire items of interest to the Church. Tomes and scrolls or other items to augment his own collection. Variant human would be the race and lucky or dungeon delver would be the feat. His skills would focus on allowing him to maximize his high dexterity and wisdom. Starting at level 7 so their 5 / Cleric 2 is my thought on the split. Anyone playing this kind of character that can give feedback?
I love unconventional clerics. I played something kind of similar, a charlatan cleric that held multiple holy symbols for whatever benefited him at the time. He was a life cleric, and he would perform "miracles" and charge double the cost of the material component, if there even was one.
As far as your character concept, I like it a lot. However, Cleric uses traditionally Str and Wisdom while Rouge uses traditionally Dex and Int. I would advise looking into Inquisitive rouge in place of Thief because Inquisitive focuses more on wisdom. The 9th level inquisitive ability gives you advantage on perception and investigation checks, so finding those valuables will be much easier. Then its a matter of replacing the movement that you get from Thief (which I don't think is really good in the first place) which you can do with a number of magical items, or even the teleportation abilities you get from Mark of Passage Human. As for any feats that you may take, that would depend on the situations you generally find yourself in. Dungeon Delver usually isn't a very valuable option unless you know you are going to need to be finding secret doors and resisting traps (Which gets partially invalidated if you are an Inquisitive rouge) Lucky is always a good call, Observant is a great feat to take, and depending on what your starting class is,taking Resilient to improve and gain proficiency with saves for either Dex or Wis is really valuable.
That’s great feedback thank you. Yeah I was really planning on playing into his weaknesses as I know it’s kind of off base stats but I really like the flavor of the idea. I appreciate the ideas fir the tweaks!!
I would suggest Knowledge Domain Cleric 6 - Mastermind Rogue 14- Choose Fey Lost Background. Feats: Fey Touched, Observant and Warlock Initiate for Devil’s Sight.
I think these two classes gom welltogether with the right subclasses and I think Knowlege and Thief are two of those. In my experience Dexterity and Wisdom are the only things you need to make this work well, although I would put a bit into Intelligence for a good investigation.
Dungeon Delver is not that great IMO. It makes sense thematically, but it is not very good mechanically. With Expertise you can already be very good at Investigation, Perception and thieves tools. A feat like Skill expert would give expertise in a third one of these and boost a stat by 1 as well, or prodigy could give you expertise along with an extra skill, tool and language. Lucky is a great choics on any character.
Not sure if you are doing point buy or rolling abilities. If you are doing point buy - If you take two feats that give a +1 you can start with an 18 dex or wisdom at 7th level. For the theme you are going for Skill Expert, Resilient and Observant are all spot on. There are lots of other great half feats but these three fit the theme you are looking for I think.
I think Cleric 2 Rogue 5 is ideal. As far as subclass goes, Knowledge is exactly what Cleric you want. Lots of Rogue subclasses work, since you have a spell caster though I would tend to lead towards Arcane Trickster. That you give you more spells, more cantrips and more spell slots. You would start with 2nd level slots. Also Booming Blade is great on a Rogue.

I think he said he is 7th level.

I think it sounds pretty good.
