SO, everywhere it is said that the 2024 version is compatible with content from 2014. But you cannot pick 2014 subclasses, since you can now only acquire those at 3rd level, is there something I am missing, or does this just screw over anyone who wants to play the 2014 version of the game?
All the 2014 content is still available and can still be used. You can still use 2014 subclasses with both the 2014 and 2024 versions of the Sorcerer class.
If you're using the 2024 version of the class, you get your subclass at 3rd level. You can pick any subclass you own the content for, including those from the 2024 books and those from the 2014 books.
If you want to use the 2014 version of the class, you can still do that, you just have to choose that instead of the 2024 one when choosing your class. In that case, you'll only be able to use the older 2014-style subclasses.
Specifically, if you are trying to use a 2014 subclass with the 2024 class, the instructions in the book (can't remember if it's PHB or DMG) are to simply hold off on the level 1/2 subclass features until level 3 when you choose your subclass via the 2024 chassis. Then you get everything up to level 3 in the subclass.
Just to note: if the 2014 subclass was updated to 2024 ruleset then your 2024 Sorcerer cannot select or use the 2014 version of the subclass.
This means the 2014 version of the subclasses: Aberrant Mind, Clockwork Soul, Draconic Bloodline and Wild Magic cannot be used for a 2024 Sorcerer and you will need to use the 2024 versions of those subclasses.

Also, most third-party subclasses are only available for either 14 or 24, but not both, and mostly 14.
