I was wondering if the release of TCE allowed it so that Sorcerers can achieve 22 Sorcery points.
I noticed the feat says:
You gain 2 sorcery points to spend on Metamagic (these points are added to any sorcery points you have from another source but can be used only on Metamagic). You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest. (emphasis added)
But the description of Sorcerer says:
Sorcery Points
You have 2 sorcery points, and you gain more as you reach higher levels, as shown in the Sorcery Points column of the Sorcerer table. You can never have more sorcery points than shown on the table for your level. You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest. (Emphasis added)
So, on one hand, the points are meant to be added, but on the other, it says you can "never" have more. Which is it?
So does this mean if you take this feat at lvl 4, you are still stuck with only 4 sorcery points? Does it mean you will still just cap out at 20 at the end?
So, unless I am mistaken usually the new rules take precedent over the old rules. Because Tasha's is the more recent ruling, it would add to your max as it says it does. There is no other way to get sorcery points aside from taking level in sorcerer or the feat that I am aware of, so the fact that it specifically adds point even if you have them from another source, makes me believe they stack.
At least that's how I would rule it. You can always tweet at the DND team and see if you get an answer.
I think the point of the rule was so that people can't just turn all their lvl 1 spell slots into sorcery points at the beginning of a day and will need to use some to up before starting to convert.
Since the feat is adding 2 to your total and not just a conversion and is also from a newer source material (Remember the PHB is 6 years old now this feat wasn't even in their minds when they wrote it) it's pretty clear the feat will let you break the current max limit by 2, and it explicitly says that in the feats rule stating it's added to any sorcery points you already have, since the sorcerer class is the only way to get sorcerery points and your always at the max listed that part of the feat would be pointless to write if it didn't override the PHBs rule
a rules reminder from xanatar's guide to everything:
Exceptions Supersede General Rules
General rules govern each part of the game. For example, the combat rules tell you that melee weapon attacks use Strength and ranged weapon attacks use Dexterity. That’s a general rule, and a general rule is in effect as long as something in the game doesn’t explicitly say otherwise.
The game also includes elements — class features, spells, magic items, monster abilities, and the like — that sometimes contradict a general rule. When an exception and a general rule disagree, the exception wins. For example, if a feature says you can make melee weapon attacks using your Charisma, you can do so, even though that statement disagrees with the general rule.
in this case, "you can never have more sorcery points than what is listed at the table" is an general rule meant to prevent an sorcerer from using 5th level spell slots as a 3rd level character for the cheap price of your starting sorcery points plus two 1st level spell slots and a 2nd level spell slot, wheras the tasha's sorcery points are an exception to this general rule
