My only gripe so far (I've only gotten to play 4 sessions thus far) with my Hexblade Warlock is the lack of Spell Slots. But I get it that's their "thing". And I am looking for ways to around it/improve upon it. Like magic items that give me another spell slot. (Rod of the Pact Keeper, Pearl of Power, Ring of Spell Storing, etc...)
Plus I also kinda like the idea of my Warlock being a bit of a "John Constantine" type of character. Where he really doesn't have any actual powers but knows how to work the system to get what he needs.
My DM bestowed a feature on my (home brewed) Pact Weapon - 2x per day, when I kill an enemy with it, I can regain a spell slot. That alone makes her want to use her sword, instead of Eldritch Blast.
Sometimes, limitations can change your personality, and RP choices, to make your character stronger, not weaker.

Now I like that idea!! I feel like there should be an Eldritch Invocation that does something like this. Like "Greatly Improved Pact Weapon" or something. Maybe someday?
The low number of spell slots is a feature, not a bug, for the warlock. Remember, it only takes a short rest to get the spell slots back.
I'm a big proponent of powers having costs/downsides, so I have no problems with the warlock having limited spell slots.
If a DM doesn't allow enough short rests, it becomes a bug.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I getting ready to start a new campaign and I am going for a more rogue style Hexblade,
human variant to get level 1 feat - mobility so I can get in and out of combat without provoking opportunity attacks and still keep my bonus action and have greater speed
took the Urchin background for the skills and thieves tools
I was gonna take it up to 5th level for the Thirsting Blade invocation but was considering multiclassing into fighter or bard (sword or whisper)
I am about to be lvl. Again most of the match is my team wanted me to EB, but I took some liberties and did some melee fighting where its appropriate. I am not enjoying just being a ranger caster at this point. I want to continue down Hexblade but I am having trouble choosing what spells and feats I would like.

I did Hexblade thru level 5 for Thirsting Blade, and I'm now 2/3 of the way thru a 3-level dip into Rogue for Swashbuckler... nice melee flexibility there

Focus on melee or support / roleplay spells & invocations.
Fiendish Vigor is a great low-level melee invoc. Devil's Sight or Eldritch Sight are good functional invocations also.
Take Agonizing Blast, if you do want to do EB, and have it more damaging. Your party will want you to take this, and Eldritch Spear. You may not want that, though...
For melee, Wrathful Smite spell is a no brainer. For other ones, take Shield, or Hex, or Expeditious Retreat - all are handy in melee.

This is your character, not the groups. You mentioned earlier that your fighter has a bow and doesn't want to stand back either. Why should you have to stand back and do something he doesn't want to do either? That seems pretty unfair. Just because you /can/ do something doesn't mean you should do that thing to exclude all else. Remember, we do this for fun. I bolded the key statement you made here, if you are not enjoying what you're doing, why do it? Don't let your party strong arm you into doing what /they/ want you
As for what I'd do, I'd stay hexblade. I'd definitely take the ASI at level 4, hexblade allows you to use your charisma bonus for your melee weapon attacks and damage. This only works with weapons which do not use the 2h property out of the box (no glaive). If you stick with the glaive, /and/ take pact of the blade, at level 3, you'll be able to use this with your pact weapon, which /can/ be a glaive. That said, I'd probably recommend ditching the glaive, and go with a shield and some variety of 1h weapon, mainly because the extra AC is going to be of benefit. That's merely personal preference though.
As for feats, I would not worry about them until you get to 20 charisma. Polearm master is cool with a glaive (my current party has a PAM fighter who just wrecks things), but I'd boost my stats first. Since you're a hexblade that + to charisma is going to help you with both your melee and your magic. As for spells and invocations, I'd focus on things that help you to be better in melee. You've already got armor of agathys which is pretty awesome and hellish rebuke. You will likely want shield and wrathful smite, both are excellent spells. Hex may be a strong pick as well, although I don't really like the concentration requirement. Misty step is fantastic to help get your out of a jam if you need.

Spell wise because you're so squishy and want to fight, I would take Armor of Agathys purely and simply forget the AC take the extra HP and the damage it does (just remember that this damage only dishes out on melee attacks) as long as you have at least 1 of the temp HP it does the max cold damage (I had to figure this out as I was reading it as I take 2 damage it does 2 damage) it also gets better as you lvl up so at 1st lvl it does 5 damage, 2nd, 3rd and 4th lvl 10 damage when you hit 5th lvl 15 damage (just for getting hit) I am counting in Warlock levels by the way not spell slot levels lol Take Agonising blast as one of your invocations to add your charisma mod to EACH HIT of eldritch blast (remember at later levels more beams, for everyone that hits you add the stat) at 5th level you get a 3rd invocation so you could always tag on Grasp of Hadar to your eldritch blast and now you have two beams that do damage plus charisma mod and pull your enemy 10ft closer to you, so if both beams hit he comes 20ft closer which means smackdown time lol It is okay to spam eldritch blast in lower levels, in fact it makes sense as you are just getting yourself prepared for a bit later on. Also depending on what else you take, your high charisma can make a warlock invaluable in role play situations, the Warlock is a jack of all trades and is good (not neccessarily great) at all of them lol
I have agonizing blast right now and I love it for the spell. I guess what I am trying to do is kinda use spells when I am not in range then get close and be able to be a melee beast. From my research Hexblade has alot of utility to it, but some people told me it is weak when compared to classes like Fighter and Paladin. Again I am not too familiar with everything new in D&D yet so this has been a giant learning experience. I am the type of person that cares more about roleplay elements than min/maxing, but also want to make sure I am useful and relevant within those elements.
One thing my DM does is that we cannot multiclass unless there is someone of that class around willing to train in it. So this makes me trying to figure out the multiclass parts a little tricky because it seems that most people multiclass Hexblade. I thought Shadow Sorcerer would be an interest combo from what I understand, but it seems it is best to go with a melee class, is that correct?
Hexblade is not weak at all. Something that might be worth considering is picking up the crossbow expert feat. That might not make sense up front, but the feat allows you to use ranged attacks without disadvantage when an enemy is within 5 feet of you. So you can nuke him straight in the face with eldritch blast without disadvantage if he wants to melee you. Fluff it however you want. The warlock in my current party likes to melee and he fluffed eldritch blast as throwing his warhammer at the enemy, which then re-appears in his hand. In melee range, he simply smashes him in the face with his hammer.
It's still just eldritch blast.

I can't really help too much on the actual specifics for a Hexblade, as I am a bookworm (pact of the tome) fiendlock. However I stand by what I said earlier that Warlocks are not the best at anything but they can be good at everything. You want to mix it up melee style great, but you can also sit at the back blasting away and buffing the party. But then you can interrogate survivors and talk your parties way out of situations as fast as your Barbarian can fight your way into them lol
Don't let your party dictate your choices, my party loves me as for some strange reason I roll low on initiative 9 times out of 10, this means they batter the ever loving shit out of the bad guys and I can finish them off with eldritch blast (or in my last session, my spider familiar electrocuted one of them lol) which means they can then focus on the next guy without having to worry about a hit coming in from some knobhead with 1hp.
We have two barbarians (one goliath and one dwarf who has boots that make him taller than the goliath!), a paladin, a rogue and me. Between me and the rogue we have range covered with the other three getting in close to melee. Me and the paladin are good for chatting up information, the rogue "acquires" things and the barbarians get drunk and intimidate a lot of people especially the now 7ft tall dwarf! This all happened naturally though, none of us forced anyone else to do something it just happened. It might be worth speaking to the rest of the party before game and explain what it is you want to do and most importantly why, if they are any good they will roll with it and help you.
I will keep that all in mind. Seems to me that Hexblade can be one of the best EB type classes despite the kit for melee. Mixing it up seems like it is one of the best ways to go. The crossbow feat is a neat idea. I wish there were some google docs out there of builds just to make it easier to look over them and to compare. Definitely like taking the ASI since getting that CH to 20 is so damn important. Since we will be level 3 here after this long rest, really want to try more melee, I am just afraid the first times I try it more I will get demolished cause of squishy, but I did take the armor spell.
Thank you very much for the help guys. I am starting to understand things a bit better.
Are you wearing medium armor? As a hexblade, you can use it. You can also carry a shield. Your best defense is not being hit, and with medium armor, your +2 bonus to AC from dexterity and using a shield you should be difficult to hit in melee. If you're going to stick with the Glaive, definitely make sure that you take blade pact so you can use your hexblade benefit (char to hit and damage rolls with your pact weapon). Without it, and an 8 str, your to hit and damage numbers would be abysmal.

I'm currently playing a Melee Hexblade with Polearm Master feat. It's great! I use repelling blast a lot to keep enemies away from me. If they run back to attack me, i get a free Opportunity Attack. I also like pushing them next to our tank. If the enemy STILL wants to fight me, I get another opportunity attack and so does the tank. Repelling blast is great for pushing enemies off cliffs away from squishy allies. With the Improved Pact Weapon invocation, your weapon counts as magical for cutting through resistances so the fighter can't say Imuch about that. I still use Eldritch Blast a lot but I do a lot of damage with my big ass glaive too. Because I'm using melee to do a good chunk of my damage, I try to use my spell slots for things that last more than one turn. I typically save my spell slots for Armor of Agathys and Hex. I took War Caster to help me out with keeping Concentration on my spells. This is a great way to play a Warlock. Lots of interesting options in combat and you can do really nice damage at range or up close.
That being said, party dynamics are important and can make the game more fun for everyone. If you haven't chosen a pact yet, you can pick something else if you want. YOur stats will work with any of them. The other options are fun too. If you don't have a healer, consider taking Celestial subclass. If you're being relied on for ranged damage, you could use a bow and stay hexblade or you could switch to a different invocation and take pact of the Tome. Warlocks have more options for diversity than any other class, in my opinion. You might be encouraged to take a ranged option if everyone else in your party is melee but the party will work no matter what you decide. Warlocks are great!
Sorry for the lack of replies. I have been super busy with work lately and haven't even had a session with my group yet since the last time. We are supposed to have one tonight. I am using medium armor. Won't be able to use the shield since I am using a polearm. We have enough exp to get to lvl 3 now so when we get to long rest I am going to get the pole arm mastery to start dishing out melee damage with CHA.
Between work, I have been doing just a little research here and there and noticed that there are quite a few people that recommend not even to multiclass. I don't know if its my lack of understanding, but if I recall the last spell a Warlock gets is not as great as say going 3 into fighter for action surge and second wind. and then having 17 levels in Warlock. I know I want at least 12 levels in warlock just to be able to get lifedrinker. That seems like a crazy invocation.
Lifedrinker is great to be sure. Action surge is at fighter level 2 and second 1 is at level 1. If you took a 3 level dip it would be for the subclass. It's not that taking the 3 level dip is bad, it's just I think you're more effective in the short term waiting to take that dip until later. I think that's what you're saying and I think it's a perfectly fine decision.
Getting to level 5 in warlock for your second attack with pact of the blade is probably one of the most important things you can do. You also get your level 3 spells.
Level 6 is kinda cool with specter.
Level 7 will get your 4th level spells
8 an ASI
9 5th level spells and a new invocation slot
10 gets you armor of hexes
11 gets you your 6th level spell
12 gets you lifedrinker and another ASI.
Honestly I think all of that is more important than anything you get for a dip into warrior and it doesn't even stop there.
Level 13 gets you your 7th level spell
Level 14 gets you master of hexes which is a huge power spike for the hexblade. This means that after you've cast your hexblade curse you can basically move it around forever, even in different combats in different locations. Every enemy you target will have the hexblade curse. I think this is arguably the most important level for the hexblade.
Level 15 is the first time I think the tradeoffs for grabbing a multiclass is even up for debate. Depending on how your table goes with it's short rests between combats, it might be worth taking warlock all the way to 20. Otherwise it's all tradeoffs that I think are pretty even.

True, but the way my DM set up my pact weapon, the slot regen is conditional on killing something with it - doesn't always happen...
