Lifedrinker is great to be sure.  Action surge is at fighter level 2 and second 1 is at level 1.  If you took a 3 level dip it would be for the subclass.  It's not that taking the 3 level dip is bad, it's just I think you're more effective in the short term waiting to take that dip until later.  I think that's what you're saying and I think it's a perfectly fine decision.

    • Getting to level 5 in warlock for your second attack with pact of the blade is probably one of the most important things you can do.  You also get your level 3 spells.
    • Level 6 is kinda cool with specter.
    • Level 7 will get your 4th level spells
    • 8 an ASI
    • 9 5th level spells and a new invocation slot
    • 10 gets you armor of hexes
    • 11 gets you your 6th level spell
    • 12 gets you lifedrinker and another ASI.

Honestly I think all of that is more important than anything you get for a dip into warrior and it doesn't even stop there.

    • Level 13 gets you your 7th level spell
    • Level 14 gets you master of hexes which is a huge power spike for the hexblade.  This means that after you've cast your hexblade curse you can basically move it around forever, even in different combats in different locations.  Every enemy you target will have the hexblade curse.  I think this is arguably the most important level for the hexblade.

Level 15 is the first time I think the tradeoffs for grabbing a multiclass is even up for debate.  Depending on how your table goes with it's short rests between combats, it might be worth taking warlock all the way to 20.  Otherwise it's all tradeoffs that I think are pretty even.

This is very similar to what I was doing. I didn't think going full Hexblade to 20 was worth it, so right now I am debating on my options for multiclassing for the future. I know sorcerer would get me some extra spell slots, and I am going to get lifedrinker so extra action with fighter isn't worth getting it up that high. I have a much better understanding for what I am doing than I did before, but its the multiclass part that gets me now.

I just hit level three with my group. I have a glaive and went improved pact weapon and pact of the blade. With what you are stating with it being moot, was that a waste on my part?

Sorry for the lack of replies. I have been super busy with work lately and haven't even had a session with my group yet since the last time. We are supposed to have one tonight. I am using medium armor. Won't be able to use the shield since I am using a polearm. We have enough exp to get to lvl 3 now so when we get to long rest I am going to get the pole arm mastery to start dishing out melee damage with CHA.

Between work, I have been doing just a little research here and there and noticed that there are quite a few people that recommend not even to multiclass. I don't know if its my lack of understanding, but if I recall the last spell a Warlock gets is not as great as say going 3 into fighter for action surge and second wind. and then having 17 levels in Warlock. I know I want at least 12 levels in warlock just to be able to get lifedrinker. That seems like a crazy invocation.

I will keep that all in mind. Seems to me that Hexblade can be one of the best EB type classes despite the kit for melee. Mixing it up seems like it is one of the best ways to go. The crossbow feat is a neat idea. I wish there were some google docs out there of builds just to make it easier to look over them and to compare. Definitely like taking the ASI since getting that CH to 20 is so damn important. Since we will be level 3 here after this long rest, really want to try more melee, I am just afraid the first times I try it more I will get demolished cause of squishy, but I did take the armor spell.

Thank you very much for the help guys. I am starting to understand things a bit better.

I have agonizing blast right now and I love it for the spell.  I guess what I am trying to do is kinda use spells when I am not in range then get close and be able to be a melee beast. From my research Hexblade has alot of utility to it, but some people told me it is weak when compared to classes like Fighter and Paladin. Again I am not too familiar with everything new in D&D yet so this has been a giant learning experience. I am the type of person that cares more about roleplay elements than min/maxing, but also want to make sure I am useful and relevant within those elements.

One thing my DM does is that we cannot multiclass unless there is someone of that class around willing to train in it. So this makes me trying to figure out the multiclass parts a little tricky because it seems that most people multiclass Hexblade. I thought Shadow Sorcerer would be an interest combo from what I understand, but it seems it is best to go with a melee class, is that correct?

posted a message on New to Warlock - Overwhelmed by Optimization but want to avoid mistakes so I have some questions..

This class has overwhelmed me a little as well. I am only level 2 and love the concept of Hexblade, but I want to make sure I am a good Hexblade as well and get some nervousness when picking out spells/feats etc.

I am about to be lvl. Again most of the match is my team wanted me to EB, but I took some liberties and did some melee fighting where its appropriate.  I am not enjoying just being a ranger caster at this point. I want to continue down Hexblade but I am having trouble choosing what  spells and feats I would like.

I may have a talk with them then. Hexblade just seemed so neat and interesting so I want to stick with that, but I feel behind because I do not know the material as much as the others. I read the books, and research but I think something just gets lost in translation which is why I am trying to understand things a bit more. We have a fighter that complains when any enemy has resistance to melee and has a bow but doesn't like to use it, but I am not letting him bring me down from enjoying the sessions.

I am using a glaive at the moment. I think my struggle is I am looking at the future path like I am playing a video game instead of taking one step at a time with the levels. My intention was to play more melee but my team keeps relying me on range.

One of the things I was thinking of for the class is to get the invocation that brings the enemy closer to me with Eldritch Blast to get them into melee range.

So after many terrible experiences in the past playing D&D I decided to give it a go with a group recently. We started at level one and have played some sessions so far.

I really like the concept of Hexblade so I decided to go down that path. Now I am pretty new to the class and having some issues with the build. I was going to go for the polearm feat at lvl 3 but I was told by people in my group why I would do that and skip the +2 CHA bonus since I just Eldritch Blast everything. They are making me think that this is a bad choice but I have heard of many great builds that do this.

I am half drow currently lvl 2.

Str 8 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 10 Wis 12 Cha 17 are my stats.

Cantrips - Dancing Lights, Eldritch Blast, Sword Burst

Spells - Hex, Armor of Agathys, Hellish Rebuke

Invocations - Agonizing Blast, Mask of Many Faces.

I have also considered multiclassing possibly with Sorcerer in the future, but it seems like Hexblades get some nice feats down the line. I have also heard of Hexblades taking Str for their bonuses and I am not sure I understand why. Sorry if this may seem common sense, but I haven't played D&D in a very long time because of my bad experiences. I am enjoying the group I am with so far and just trying to understand the class a bit more.
