I recently started playing after a short 31 year break. I’m loving D&D Beyond. I just leveled a Warlock to two, and selected Armor of Shadows. I see it on the character sheet and it shows it as an at will invocation. Awesome right? But I don’t see a way to actually activate/cast it. Do I have to manually modify my AC or is there something I am missing?
Thanks in advance. May advantage rolls always be with you!
It is. But there is no “cast” red icon like the other spells above it. And touching the spell in the list just brings up the description.
To clarify, the spell mage armor shows up in the “Features” tab under the chosen invocations. It is not in the spell list or selectable warlock spells to lean. Just as an at will ability under Features. I’ll look for a way to add the spell manually to the known spells.
At-will abilities, such as cantrips, at-will warlock invocations, and certain innate/racial spells, never have a "cast" button.
Probably because, because they don't have a limit to how many times they can be cast per rest, nor do they use up a spell slot or other resource, there's no need to keep track of how many times they've been used.
So your character sheet is behaving perfectly normally!
You should just make your base AC 13. Mage Armor lasts 8 hours and since you can cast it at will there’s never a good time to not have it going. Even through long rests, you should still keep it up.
Keep in mind that the character sheet doesn't function like a video game. On sheets where Mage Armor does have a cast button (say a wizard who had it prepared), it doesn't raise the AC on the sheet.
This is due to in game time being something that the DM tracks. What may be 8 hours for one group (perhaps 2 hours of real life time), might be the same as 30 mins for another group. Modifications due to spells should be tracked by the player.
I understand. I’d make it a point of casting it when I wake up, when I go to bed, and twice during the day. Sooner or later the DM will let it be an auto up.

Isn’t Mage Armor listed as an at will first level spell?

Ok. Thanks. I’ll just manually adjust the AC up as needed then. Cheers!

Tim, Understood. But GM discretion - wanted me to be specific when I invoked it each time (no treating it like an auto-up).
