I'm currently playing a Illusionist Wizard that dislikes using magic to harm others, so pretty much all my spells are utility-based with no damage. He is basically the party rogue, he is way more based on deceit than magic. Because of his back story, though, he needs to become a assassin of sorts, so I'm multiclassing him into rogue (probably getting SCAG's swashbuckler to do so, using Dual Wielding).
My problem is choosing how much to go, I'm thinking he should trully become a Rogue after his plot-milestone, so I'm planning at least a 12 Rogue/ 8 Wizard (for 4th lvl spells, Reliable Talent and extra ASI), but since I'm only lvl 4 Wiz / 1 Rogue right now, I'm not sure if that's the best. Do any of you have any tips?
Keep in mind I'm focusing on fun and character arc, not really worrying about the most optmized build.
The thing is: is it worth it to have 3rd Level spells for a non main caster character? Because I'd take something like Blink, Major Image or Haste, instead of damaging spells like fireball. And Rogues get something really usefull every level (at least until level 8, meaning for my build).

Interesting concept, but I highly recommend you to get your 5th level in wizard asap because of the reach of a new spell level.

Thanks for the tip!
Major Image and Hypnotic Pattern. But seriously, Major Image. Let me repeat, MAJOR IMAGE.

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of
I have to agree, Major Image is a game changer for a wizard, even more if such a wizard doesn't like to do damage through his spells.
