I was looking at the list of Necromancy spells for wizards and noticed this spell was listed. I am having trouble understanding why this spell would necromantic. I would think it would be Conjuration because it involves "moving" to a different plane, where as Necromancy deals with "life, death, and undeath"
Good point. How spells are categorized by schools of magic isn't always intuitive. In fact, I'd say sometimes it's arbitrary. I also think which spells fall under arcane, primal and divine magic is also arbitrary. I wish WoTC would spend time clearing up these sorts of conceptual issues (and make relevant changes).
My apologies, I dont know why I thought the spell was conjuration. Also, for my primary post, I was saying it should be a necromantic spell. Not sure what happened with my thinking. I apologize to everyone for such confusion both in my post and with my responses. I do thank y'all for responding. Cyb3rM1nd, thanks for all the clarification.

Started playing 1e in the late 70s and stopped in the mid-80s. Started immersing myself into 5e in the last year.
It's Necromancy because that is the school of magic for manipulating life force and a person's soul.
Astral Project works by manipulating your soul. It moves your soul out of your body and sends it across the planes.

Exactly. That is why I was so confused that the spell isn't categorized as necromancy
You're not making any sense.
Your original post is wondering why it is necromancy instead of conjuration.
Your new post is agreeing with me that it should be necromancy and wondering why it isn't necromancy.
Your two posts contradict each other. Also, it is a Necromancy spell.
