Would you allow steel wind strike being the contingent spell and the 'tigger' being to cast haste? All fit the criteria of cast on self and would allow a wizard to take combat to the baddies.

As I mentioned in the other thread, if Steel Wind Strike is used as the contingent spell, you can only attack yourself with it, so while it's technically allowed, it's not very useful.

Steel Wind Strike was already mentioned and I have already explained it is not a good use for Contingency.
I’d like to poise, Steel wind, strike as a possible spell for contingency, asking for any rationale as to why it would not be used. Though the spell does damage to other creatures the spell itself targets the caster, allowing him to make the attack. my rationale is based on previous threads that acknowledge Thunderstep as a viable option which does damage to creatures and also allows another creature to be brought along. Would love to discuss thanks.
Steel Wind Strike may target only you, but it affects others.
Contingency states the contingent spell can only have an effect on you. So, yes you can certainly store SWS as a contingent spell : but since it is blocked from affecting anyone but you, it would be completely useless to do so.

Another bladesinger specific case and kind of repeating what others have said, but using a contingent blink with the condition "when I cast haste on myself" would be a pretty neat way of negating some of the risk with an otherwise fun and thematic spell.
I'm playing a wizard who started with an artificer dip. So I have access to Cure wounds, for a good contingent heal.
But I also have Guidance. So could I use a contengency: whenever I am the target of a spell that I choose to try to counterspell, cast guidance on myself (to add a d4 to the ability check for counter spell)?

It seems like whoever wrote the description for Contingency figured you'd only ever use it for leveled spells, since it says "expending spell slots for both". A very strict reading of the rules might say you technically can't use a cantrip with it for that reason, but I'd allow it and I imagine most other DMs would.

I'd absolutely allow it. Idk if it's the best use of a 6th level spell just to fire off a cantrip one time... per the spell description, "the contingent spell takes effect immediately after the trigger occurs for the first time, whether or not you want it to", the Guidance would go off the first time you used Counterspell even if you didn't have to roll, thus wasting the Contingency spell. But could also be worth it if you remember to Counterspell using lower spell slots/only when you know the spell your Counterspelling is higher than the slot you want to use.

I've recently grown to like circle of power with a trigger of anytime I am about to be subjected to a magical attack.
