Hello! Wizards has access to life transferance: You sacrifice some of your health to mend another creature’s injuries. You take 4d8 necrotic damage, and one creature of your choice that you can see within range regains a number of hit points equal to twice the necrotic damage you take.
You could kill yourself using this spell. If one have 5 hp left, cast this spell and get 30 hp of damage, would it then stike you unconcious and heal the intended target for 2*30 (the damage the spell deals) or 2*5 (as you did not have more hp left)? So if you were a necromancer that did that, you killed yourself with a lvl 3 spell. Then grim harvest would give you 9 hp back...?
You don't kill yourself unless the amount of "extra" damage is equal to your Max HP. Otherwise, at 0 HP you fall unconscious - you're dying, not dead.
The healing is twice what you take. You can take more damage than you have in hit points so it doesn't matter how many HP you have left.
E.G.:
Wizard casts Life Transference and rolls 20. They have 15 Hit Points left. The Wizard will drop to 0 Hit Points and is Dying. The target will heal 40 Hit Points.
Grim Harvest would not be triggered as Wizard did not die.
-
Another Example:
Wizard casts Life Transference and rolls 20. They had 2 hit points left and their Max HP was 16. Since the 20 damage would take them to -18, they instantly die. The target heals 40 Hit Points.
Grim Harvest does not trigger because healing does not work on the dead.

You cannot heal dead people, they are dead. It is also very unlikely a necromancer would automatically die from Life Transference.
