Having dug into the new Mythic Odysseys of Theros book, I've come up with an idea for a Level 1 Triton Wizard. The character would be focused primarily on cold/lightning/thunder damage (wield the power of the storm!) ... so most likely School of Evocation at Level 2. Background would be sailor. Character roles would be offense (melee + spells), area effects, battlefield control, and some utility.
Tools/Etc.: Navigator's Tools (sailor) , Water Vehicles (sailor)
Weapons: Trident (proficient, DM said ok), Net (without proficiency)
Rolled for starting equipment
Cantrips
Frostbite (cold damage)
Booming Blade (thunder damage)
Shape Water
1st-Level Spells
Fog Cloud (once per long rest from Triton)
Alarm (ritual)
Chromatic Orb (choice of cold, lightning, thunder damage)
Find Familiar (ritual, octopus familiar)
Mage Armor (13 + Dexterity modifier = 15)
Shield
Thunderwave (thunder damage)
The character's spiritual gift would be Pious which provides (1) Pious Protection: Reroll failed saving throw (once per long rest), (2) Religious Study: Advantage on Religion checks pertaining to chosen god, and (3) Starting Piety: Begin with piety score of 3 with chosen god.
The character's chosen god would be Keranos (God of Storms). As a Keranos Devotee (piety 3+), the character would be able to add 1d6 lightning damage to damage from weapon attacks. This feature can be used a number of times equal to the Intelligence modifier (so 3 times at Level 1).
Seems like it would be fun to to use Booming Blade to attack with the trident (2-handed). A hit would cause 1d8+3 piercing damage plus 1d6 lightning damage plus 1d8 thunder damage (if the target moves before start of character's next turn).
I considered Tempest Cleric, but didn't see cantrips that fit the character. However, it would be great to have heavy armor and Wrath of the Storm (as well as other domain features).
I also considered Storm Sorcerer, but didn't like the limited number of 1st-level spells. However, an extra cantrip would be nice. And I could add another language and fly into the air without provoking opportunity attacks.
Main Questions: Curious to hear if anyone has played a Triton Wizard. If so, what was your experience? Any suggestions for tweaks to the above build? Would I really miss out by not choosing Tempest Cleric or Storm Sorcerer?
So, as I see here, your Triton have 2 levels of Cleric, and also 3 levels of Avocado Wizz....
Just 2 Levels of Evocation Wizard.

Anyway, did you consider a Druid? They have a lot more "storm" and "sea" related spells than a Wizard.

Actually what I put forth in my original post was a Level 1 Wizard. I would eventually pick School of Evocation at Level 2. No multiclassing.
Just curious to hear feedback on the Level 1 plan, especially from those who've played Triton Wizards. Also curious to hear strong arguments for Tempest Cleric or Storm Sorcerer (or Druid?) over Wizard for a Triton with an interest in cold/lightning/thunder (storm) spells.
It is really hard to make a powerful Melee single class Wizard. As a Triton, by RAW, you can not take bladesinging. Unless you multi-class or spend all your feats on combat:
Your AC will always be inferior.
You will have significantly lower # of attacks.
You will be using inferior weapons.
That does not mean you can't do it, but it will be all about roleplaying someone that has choosen to ignore obvious ways to live longer. (i.e. using ranged spells to attack).
Looks interesting to me. What is your Triton evoker's spell book like? (I imagine normal paper and ink might not do well if you spend time underwater...)
Consider the War Caster (if you plan to spend time in melee) and/or Spell Sniper (if you stick to range) feats, in addition to ASIs to INT, DEX and CON.

He can totally be a triton bladesinger in the new reworked bladesinger
