It was an excellent resource for new players, giving a high level overview of how the game works, and links for more information for each part of the game.
It's been replaced by - well, nothing really.
Can we please get the old New Players Guide restored?!
Really all they've done for new players is a link to the basic rules and character creation. What they used to have was an excellent basic rundown about how the game worked - eg in the screenshot I provided above, they briefly summaries the 3 phases of play. It really was a fantastic resource to give to brand new players, much better than the Basic Rules (which of course it also linked to!).
I cannot imagine what was the thinking behind removing it either - it's not like it took work to maintain.
Are any D&D Beyond mods or staff able to advise what happened?
It happened when WotC took over so now it promotes the free Adventure book instead. Also, most of the stuff it said before is covered in the intro to the Basic Rules & SRD. I agree it was a useful resource before, but now it promotes the free products which contain much of the same information worded differently. It also promotes this site’s services which is how they make money.

They have linked some quite comprehensive guides from that page now. The layout is different, but the guides are pretty good if you read them.
A caffeinated nerd who has played TTRPGs or a number of years and is very much a fantasy adventure geek.
