I am a new player and I decided to use this platform to make the character creation and leveling up easier for myself.
Here's my problem: The game I'm joining only uses the Player's Handbook source, which I've purchased here. However, when choosing spells and abilities, I have access to content from sources I haven't purchased. I guess in any other context I wouldn't complain! But since I have to respect only the player's handbook rules, it's confusing to have to double check in the manual to make sure I don't equip anything that I shouldn't have access to.
For example, as a warlock, I was choosing invocations and I was interested in ''Investment of the Chain Master''. However, after checking in the book, I realized it's not in my source and I can't use.
I don't want to show up to my table with abilities that won't be approved. Why can I equip abilities and spells I haven't purchased? Is there a way to filter only my purchased content?
Campaigns with content sharing turned on allows all material purchased on the site to be shared by all the people who have a character in that campaign. So if your DM owns the PHB and is sharing it with you that way, they're also sharing everything else they own. Unfortunately, there's no way to limit what people in the campaign have access to in the character builder. It's long been an issue, and more filters have long been on the request list. If you're limited to PHB only, I'd suggest reading through the PHB directly to get an idea of what you want to make, and then have it open in a separate tab to double check when you make your character.
Since you own the PHB on this site you could build your character outside of the campaign and you will only have access to the PHB material, and a few races/subraces and some spells from the EEPC which is free content available to everyone. So as long as you don’t select any of the EEPC content you should be fine. Then join the campaign with the ready character and all should be as approved. That won’t help you when it comes to leveling up, so you’ll still want to follow pocketmouse‘s advice and read through the relevant sections of the PHB (Warlock class section & Warlock spell list), but it’ll at least make it easier to get started.
Thank you for the replies pocketmouse and IamSposta!
To clarify, I'm not part of any campaign since joining the site. I think the table I'm joining is playing with pen and paper! I got Dnd Beyond after learning I had to join in at lvl 6, and all that extra spellcasting and multiclassing was a bit hard to keep track of, I needed to automate a little bit :)
That being said, double checking the PHB guide through another tab has been the solution so far, so I agree with that.
Let's hope the filters are improved eventually. Thanks again!
Wait, you’re accessing content from books you haven’t purchased on a character that is not in a campaign with content sharing?!? That’s not sposta happen.
I just checked Tasha's handbook in the sources menu and when I try to access any chapter, it sends me to the purchase page, so it seems to accurately recognize I never bought it.
But when I look through the available Eldritch invocations, for example, I can see the ''Investment of the Chain Master'', which according to ******* is a Tasha's Cauldron exclusive invocation. I almost chose that before double checking in PHB.
I also see a bunch of EE spells, but what I'm understanding is that this is available to everyone right now, like IamSposta said.
That's why I was thinking how much easier it would be to see only content I purchased or own.
Oh sorry I forgot to confirm that. I just checked and it clearly says, after selecting my character : ''You haven't joined or created any campaigns yet''.

Thanks for the follow-up!
I swear I only purchased PHB 😅

And you’re absolutely sure that character isn’t in the campaign already, and you aren’t building it in that campaign?
