So I have question that's kinda a two parter. I just recently have gotten back into the world of DND and the fire has definitely been stoked. Stupid of me but a mistake either way. To get back into the swing things my wife bought me the starter kit and the Players Handbook. She like me thought that would be a great place to start. The question I have is buying items here I have understand you get access to content online as well. My question is if and when I buy books here do I get a digital copy to access while logged on here. 2nd Part if the event I do get digital copy while logged into here is there a way to get my current purchases to be allowed access digitally on here while logged in. I really don't especially during these chaotic times have the money to buy another copy of something I already own. Please help me with matter
If you purchase books here, you get access (through the website and/or the mobile app) to a digital copy of the books and to the books content in tools like the monster listings, character builder, spell listings, etc.
There is not a way to free access to content you purchased in physical form. There are several reasons for that, but the core reason is that DDB and Wizards of the Coast and different companies and DDB must pay licensing fees to Wizards for D&D content.
The good news is that depending on what you need DDB for, you may not need to "repurchase" content here--or at least not entire books--do do what you want. Indeed, while DDB is incredibly helpful for many of us, it is perfectly possible to play D&D without it.
At the moment, because of the quarantine, some adventures are available to be accessed for free for a limited time. Lost Mines, the adventure that comes with the starter set, is only available for free for a few more days. But you have the print copy, so while there is convenience in having it here, too, it's not necessary. [Now, if you have the Essentials kit and not the Starter Kit, you can get access to the adventure in it for free, permanently, using the code available in the box. That kit also includes a coupon for 50% off the Players Handbook here]
There is also some basic content free for everyone all the time. This is material that Wizards has published for free in the Basic Rules and something called the System Reference Document or SRD, although here the Basic Rules and SRD have been combined and just called the Basic Rules. This free content is a very pared down version of the players handbook, plus some monsters and some of the information from the Dungeon Master's Guide.
Since you are just starting out, you are on a budget, and you have the PHB and Starter kit in physical form already, I would suggest that you stick with the free version of what's available here for now, and use this site mostly for character sheets and for references to those monsters and spells that are in the free rules. All of the pregenerated characters from the starter kit can be built here with the free tools. If you want to stretch out beyond those character options, you can purchase the options you want piecemeal instead of purchase all of the PHB here; what you spend is tracked, and credited toward the full purchase price here. If you would like more information about how to do that, please ask. I'd be happy to help.
