Here's the situation. I created a character as part of a friends campaign. He has a lot of content unlocked on D&D beyond. I want to use a copy of that character in a different groups campaign. If I remove the copy of the character from the campaign it was built in I may lose some things because I used some content that isn't free when I created my character.
I am interested in purchasing what I need to keep my character intact. However I can't afford to buy all the books my friend has. How can I tell what parts of my character came from what source. Or is there a way to buy just the components I need for my character without trying to track down the source of each piece?
As I understand it, when you build a character within a campaign using shared content, and then take it out, it should still function as long as you don’t remove anything. However, if you want to look up where what came from, say, a spell, just go to the “game rules” area and then “spells,” “all spells” and search the name of the spell. When you click on it it’ll say you don’t have access unless you buy this book With a link to the store. There you could just buy the spells from that book and nothing else. Should work for everything. If you are still in the campaign with sharing enabled, instead of telling you you cannot view it, it will show you the thing, and down the bottom it tells you what book it’s from.
It will still function as a character outside of the campaign if you make a copy of said character. However, as stated, you cannot readd the equipment/spells/ect from the content you don't own if you accidentally remove them. The only thing that I have noticed that you cannot do with said copy of character, if you do not own all the content for it, is you cannot export your character sheet. You will continually get an error if you try to. You actually have to own the content to export any character sheet that has said equipment/spells/ect from anything.1

Thank you both for your responses. That should help.
