Is there a way for a homebrew monster to link to a homebrew spell? The [spell] tag doesn't work, and I'm not aware of a homebrew spell tag. The spell is published, and the monster will be when I get it working correctly, but that shouldn't matter if they are both my own homebrew anyway. Since the spell is published I should be able to add a URL to it, but that's pretty clunky, and may run afoul of the linking rules for published content.
I was able to do something similar (for player convenience) by just adding a link, but it does look awkward and the hover feature doesn't work. Will be excited for when this feature gets implemented.
Don’t hold your breath. As far as I know, this is not something that is slated to be added. For example, there are 7 published homebrew spells named “Absolute Zero,” and who knows how many unpublished spells there are with the same name. So, if you could tooltip homebrewed spells, and if you tried to tooltip a spell called Absolute Zero, how the heck is the system supposed to know which one you mean?
Homebrews are each designated with a unique ID# attached to the spell name. You can look it up by checking the URL for your homebrews. For example, one of my homebrewed spells is called “Grasping Light,” and the URL is https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/389095-grasping-light.
So, with the system set up the way it is, you would need to include that number and the hyphens, so what would go between the tooltip brackets would be “389095-grasping-light,” but in order to omit all of those extra characters from the display, you would have to add “;grasping light” so the whole thing would end up looking like this: [_spell]389095-grasping-light;grasping light[/spell_] (minus the underscores of course).
Now, I know you’re probably thinking “all of that would be annoying, but better that than nothing, so why don’t they do it?” Right? The thing is, what we type in for a tooltip looks like that, but the actual code for a tooltip looks quit different. For example, the code that runs the tooltip for Light actually looks like this:
Now, if slapping together tooltips were easy, then we would have them for Skills, Feats, Class Features, Racial Traits, and Vehicles. But we don’t. So I’m willing to bet that they can’t just add a category and call it a day, those codes must not be automatically generated for some reason. You can see how creating tooltips for homebrews is probably a very long way down the list, if it’s even on the list at all.

This is planned and rather high priority, but not yet possible.

Tooltips (Help/aid)
Is there any update on this?
It has been over a year since this posting. I still do not have the ability to link a private homebrew spell to a private homebrew item.
Still, any update on this?
Any updates?
anything?
bump?
Guess this still doesn't work?
I have this problem too and it's been over 3 years since this forum was made.
It's kinda frustrating.
