Hello everyone, I am having the hardest time trying to figure this out and I have searched these forums. I do not want to add homebrew spells. I am rewarding my players the spellbooks found as treasure in Descent into Avernus. I own the sources books and the module through D&D Beyond. I created a campaign and share all the content with them.
How can I do this? Is there a way to add extra spells to their character sheets beyond what their class allows? This has to be an easy fix that I am clearly missing!
Are any of your players Wizards, or have some similar ability to copy spells into their own spellbooks? Otherwise they're not really going to be able to use the spellbooks to learn spells.
The Wizard class, the Warlock Pact of the Tome / Book of Shadows invocation, and the Ritual Caster feat all provide a mechanism for adding spells. Otherwise, the players would just decide what they'd like to do with the spellbooks, like selling or trading for a favor.
...If you really want to give them some access to the spells, you could have a few in the form of spell scrolls. The players would still be limited to casting just what spells are on their class spell lists, though.

And Pact of the Tome as well as Ritual Caster feat only allow those characters to copy spells with the ritual tag.
Only Wizards have the ability to copy and learn spells from Spellbooks or other written sources. Artificers, Clerics, Druids, and Paladins automatically “Know” all of their spells and only have to choose which to prepare every day. Bards, Rangers, Sorcerers and Warlocks can (typically only learn new spells when they gain a new level in their class, and only levels indicated in the “Spells Known” columns of their respective tables.
You can grant them additional spells if you want to, but it will involve creating “Homebrew” copies of their subclasses. For the prepared ‘casters (Artificer - Paladin), you can add them as additional “always prepared” spells by adding those spells under the “Additional Specific Spells” section under Basic Information. For the spontaneous casters (Bard - Warlock), you will need to add a class feature and under the that, in the “Spells” subsection you will need to list each spell as an individual entry and set “Consumes Spell Slot” to Yes, and “Counts as Known” to No.
Simply replace their existing subclasses with your customized versions. Both Sorcerers and Warlocks select their subclasses at 1st-level, so simply replace their Sorcerous Origin and Patron in the dropdowns on the Class tab of the character builder for those PCs. For example, if the Sorcerer is an Aberrant Mind, replace that with your version of the Aberrant Mind instead.
thank you for the info, it is a big help. that is my trouble thus far, the homebrews I created are not showing up as options so far. I need to spend more time figuring out how to do that. hope I can do so before Wednesday. LOL

On the Home tab of the character builder for each of those characters, the toggle next to “Homebrewed Content” needs to be on (red, to the right).
You must also specifically make sure that your homebrewed versions of those subclasses are in “[Your] Homebrew Collection” or they won’t be available in campaigns. After you have added them to those specific characters you can remove those subclasses from your collection to make sure nobody else ever accidentally uses them. Worry not, those characters already using them to will still keep those subclasses and their custom features.

okay thanks, yes, I misspoke, I want to give extra spells to my sorcerer and warlock as loot they find.
I have created the homebew subclasses now I can't figure out how to add the subclass to their existing character sheets.
I'll go through all the tutorials on your profile, ImSposta, to see if I can figure it out. This really should be easier to do.
Fun.
