New to this site and very much like it so far. Also a first time DM and one of my players is a Dark elf and there doesn't seem to be that option in the character creation. any work around for that or am I missing something?
Thanks!

(GPyromania):
Locking this thread as the OP has received the answer they were looking for and this discussion as run its course.
Also, please take a look at the Pricing & Purchase FAQ, as there are a number of options available - your player can purchase just the drow race if they wish, rather than purchasing the full player's handbook.
Some people who are new to D&D Beyond can find it a little bit overwhelming and some incorrectly make the assumption that they need to spend hundreds of dollars on purchases before they can play using D&D Beyond.
If you have any other questions, take a look at the FAQ I linked first - if you don't find an answer or are still unsure, please ask and we'll be happy to help. :)
Is there the facility to just buy a race? I have the PHB and Xanathars hardback copies and dont want to spend cash to buy them again, however I would love to use dnd beyond to create my character (drow warlock).

There sure is! If you take a look at any of the books in the marketplace, such as the Player's Handbook and click on details - you'll see a page about that book. Scroll down and you'll see partial purchase options.
Drow is $1.99
The great thing about this is, if you decide later that you do want to purchase the full Player's Handbook on D&D Beyond, then any partial purchases are discounted off the price.
Actually, they are in the Player's handbook, so so idea why they're not available here
Every race from the PHB (as well as any other character option from any other official supplement) is available here, you just need to buy either the Digital version of the content on DDB marketplace, or the single character option you might be interested into.
The content available for free on DDB is only the SDR (also known as Basic Rules), everything else you either buy or code in yourself using the homebrew tools (which are also free)
And what if I already own a physical copy of the PBH?
There is currently no way to validate the purchase of a physical product to get access to the same content here in DDB, for two main reasons:
1) There is no unique code associated with each single copy of the books;
2) As Curse and WotC are two separate entities, one licensing content from the other, Curse has no obligation to recognise any purchase made to WotC.
If you do not think the price asked for the digital version of the books (which are quite nicely discounted, and there are coupon codes to make them even cheaper) are worth it, you can also either just buy the pieces you are interested in, or use the homebrew tools (completely free) to re-create anything that is the books, which will be available to you in the DDB system for you and people in campaigns with you to use.
Hum, also very new... to dnd in general actually. I purchased Drow for $1.99. The charge is pending on my bank account but I have no email confirming it nor a code at all to unlock it and it's not available for my character. What did I do wrong? Help?!
Astalon, One other thing to remember is if a user has a master level subscription they can share content with players in their campaigns... So there's no need for all your friends to purchase the same content... You're likely better off with one account purchasing the content and the subscription and sharing with your friends.

Hi there Astalon and welcome to D&D Beyond!
Drow are not part of the D&D 5th edition SRD and will need to be unlocked from the marketplace before you can use them on D&D Beyond.
D&D Beyond can be used for free and contains information from the following "free to use" sources published by Wizards of the Coast: D&D 5th edition SRD, D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, and Elemental Evil Companion.
Content from other sources, such as the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, or Monster Manual, will need to be purchased from the Marketplace or accessed via another user sharing content with you via their Master Tier Subscription.
Also, please take a look at the Pricing & Purchase FAQ, as there are a number of options available - your player can purchase just the drow race if they wish, rather than purchasing the full player's handbook.

Care to elaborate on how you consider this a paywall when compared to physical books?
