If the team can't be bothered to fix this, is there a simple way to add the bonus to what displays on the character sheet beyond simply adding a customized comment to the spell? I'm DMing for a group of very inexperienced players, so I have to constantly remind the cleric to add the points on his heal spells. It just makes more work for me as a DM and I don't want a PC to die because of this issue because I didn't happen to catch it.
It's possible, but it's not simple. You basically have to homebrew new versions of the spells, and then apply them to either that class or make a new homebrew subclass to go with it.

I guess this is the route I’ll go then. Thanks for the advice!

I've tried to add a Note a bonus under "Customization" as a reminder for the healing spells. But what I don't understand is how to vary the bonus when you upcast. Life Clerics get a bonus "equal to 2 + the spell’s level" so when you upcast Cure Wounds at 2nd level it's +3 and at 3rd level it's +4. How do you account for the bonus increasing with a homebrew version of healing spells?

At Higher Levels:Scaling Level Value: 1 - Modifier to Scale: Bonus - Hit Points (1d8 + 3) - Scale Effect: Additional Points - Dice count: 1 - Die type: d8 - Fixed value: 1
Thank you! I'll give it a try. I haven't tried making a full-on custom spell so I won't know how that works until I try it. We have an NPC Life Cleric on the team so this issue is very relevant.

No problem! You should be able to use the existing spell as a template, which will help a lot. If I can't figure out how to do something, I look for another spell that already does what I want, and make a copy of that one to see how it works in the homebrew tool.
Making a homebrew version of the Life Domain is useful because it'll let you swap out the always-prepared versions of the spells. What it won't do is remove the original version of the spell from your spell list, since it's obviously a cleric spell. I get around this by in the character sheet, customizing the names of the spells to something like 'No' or '---' so they don't get confusing. To do this, you have to prepare the spell, but once you've made the customization you can unprepare it and it'll stick.

whoa...so I have to create an entire domain as a homebrew, not just the spell? I see the issue now with total number of spells memorized because it will always include the original Cure Wounds and count it toward your spell max, right? What about if you just ignore the spell max and add the new version of Cure Wounds plus the old version? I don't think it penalizes you if you have too many spells memorized, does it?

Taking it one step at a time, I made the homebrew spell, I think I got it right the way that you suggested. But now my Cleric can't seem to add it. How do you find a homebrew spell when you Manage spells?

If you copied the spell from the existing version of the spell, it should already be set to 'Available for Classes: Cleric' (you can fine-tune this to a subdomain as well, including homebrew ones). If you made it from scratch you'd want to double check this; it's at the bottom of the 'Basic Information' section when editing the spell. Also make sure that the spell is in your collection. You don't have to publish it, and it should automatically be in your collection, but this is another thing to double check (in your 'My Homebrew Creations' page, expand the spell, and check for a blue box near the bottom, if it says 'Remove from collection,' then you're fine).
On the character end, they should make sure that they have homebrew turned on in the character preferences (slider is to the right), and the character is in your campaign where you have content sharing turned on (you might also need to check that you've allowed homebrew in the content management for the campaign? Not clear on how that works). The spell should be in the list of prepared spells. Sometimes I have to refresh a few times, but it usually shows up pretty quickly. Spells sort by level, then alphabetically within each level. The filter search should also work. If you didn't rename your original version of your spells, (ie, if you see two spells both called 'Cure Wounds') you can confirm which one is the homebrew one because the description in the sidebar will have a line that says 'Version,' whereas the original, non-homebrew will not.

Boom. I had to refresh the character a couple times and there was the spell. It now thinks I'm over my spell limit by adding it, but I don't think that has any effect so it works! I'll just have to be careful as he levels up to keep track of how many spells he can actually memorize. Now I can do the same thing for Healing Word and Mass Healing Word, right?

I don't think it's 'absurd', as stated by Stormknight, to get it functioning correctly requires a rebuilding of the spell system backend to be more modular. Considering that they're still racing to implement new features, overhauling existing features that are working well enough is a lower priority.
Yes, it's a little bit of work to remember your class feature to apply it, but that's true of all class features. This just happens to be one that people expect more than others.

Thanks! This is a handy workaround.
Creating a homebrew subclass would fix the max overage issue, but you're right, it's easy enough to ignore. The full list of spells that I ended up adjusting for Disciple of Life are Cure Wounds, Heal, Healing Word, Mass Cure Wounds, Mass Heal, Mass Healing Word, Prayer of Healing, Raise Dead, Regenerate, and Revivify. If you are using the recent Class Features UA, you'd also want to homebrew up Aura of Life and Aura of Vitality.
It's a lot of work, and to the point other people in the thread and elsewhere have made, I wish they would at least compromise in a similar way that they've done with other items and allowed Adam or someone else official to publish a homebrew version, but considering that using someone else's homebrew requires a paid subscription and the Life Domain is one of the free options, that doesn't really solve the problem to my satisfaction.

@Davedamon, I’m sure everyone at DDB is working as hard as they can, and I’m not here to dump on these fine folks, but it’s not like this is a domain feature that appeared in the latest sourcebook. It’s in the original PHB. It’s very similar to the content sharing issue, which also took well over a year from DDB saying it was on a list to be fixed until it was actually implemented correctly with selectable toggles. Hero and Master Tier subscribers like myself are paying a monthly subscription fee, and I assume that fee is partly used to hire talented people to fix these issues. It’s not too much to ask that these issues be fixed in a quicker manner. 12-18+ months is WAY too long, and as a customer, I wish that these problems would be fixed with a bit more alacrity. It’s a bit much to ask DMs to create custom spells to get around a programming issue.
TL;DR - I wish DDB would worry less about implementing new features when very basic functionality is not being addressed. Cheers.

This is how I did Cure Wounds. Same method should apply to any other spells:
Modifiers: Bonus Hit Points - Dice roll: 1d8 - Fixed value: 3 - Primary stat: true
At Higher Levels: Scaling Level Value: 1 - Modifier to Scale: Bonus - Hit Points (1d8 + 3) - Scale Effect: Additional Points - Dice count: 1 - Die type: d8 - Fixed value: 1

Just to be clear, though:
It's absurd that we have to create custom spells to make a Life Cleric's main Domain power function properly.
This thread is approaching its second birthday. If it were a child it'd be confidently walking and have a small vocabulary by now!
I don't think it's 'absurd', as stated by Stormknight, to get it functioning correctly requires a rebuilding of the spell system backend to be more modular. Yes, it's a little bit of work to remember your class feature to apply it, but that's true of all class features. This just happens to be one that people expect more than others.
