I was looking into purchasing Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and Volo's Guide to Monsters, but it looked like it costs more to purchase the book then what makes up the book. Perhaps I'm miss interpreting what the Compendium copy is, but if you bought everything excluding that you'd save 5 to 10 dollars and have the content.
Is purchasing the individual bits, only give you access to their DND beyond lists or can you still read the content it includes?

The individual bits give you access to that information in the character builder and the listings. It does not give you access to the compendium content (the "ebook" of the source, found under the Compendium button). I think purchasing a race or subclass gives you compendium-like content for that race or subclass if you go to characters>races>official (or characters>classes>official), but I can't check to be sure; while I have purchased some individual races and subclasses, I am also currently benefitting from content sharing and someone in my campaign has the legendary bundle, so I see everything. Maybe someone else can verify or correct me on that.
