The only reason it goes up to 6 is because of the Artificer. Before that the limit was 3. They will only increase the limit above 6 if WotC publishes something with more attunement slots than that.
We used to have very few attunable items. 5E seems to have quite a bit more.
But we used to only allow one per 'area' on the body. Such as 1 set of armor, one shield, one pendants/ broach, one ring on each hand, one necklace, one set of footwear, one set of bracers, one set of gloves one set of head gear, one cloak and one holdable magic device like a wand or staff per hand.
10 or more magic items could be in effect at the same time. Attunement was left to only the most powerful multi function magic items and those often came with a disadvantage also.
It never broke the game. It was just up to the Dm to find ways to limit finding those things.
And remember players are not the only people in a world to have the detect magic ability. Thieves LOVE finding magic stuff. Everyone is willing to buy it.
Yeah, but in older editions the game was generally more focused around collecting various magic items. 5e was designed and balanced more around the consistent collection of class features with relatively few, or even no magic items whatsoever. It’s just a difference in how they designed this addition. An entire campaign could run from 1-20 this edition with nothing but healing potions, and an uncommon magic weapon for each of the martial characters and be totally fine.
I found out how to add 6 attunement slots to my character sheet.
But if I wanted more could they take the limit of 6 away or make an attunement slot feat with a prerequisite in order to over the 6 slot limit?
I think adding more then that breaks the website a bit.

Going above 6 might not break the website, but it would certainly break the game.
