I noticed that the urchin background (as well as several others) weren't available. I tried creating it as a custom background, but three out of four of the proficiencies were also unavailable. For skills, sleight of hand and stealth weren't there, and for tools, the thieves' tools weren't there. Is there a specific reason for this or are they missing from the site? I just found it odd that things from the basic PHB weren't there.
The feature/subclass/race you are referring to is not part of the D&D 5th edition SRD and will need to be unlocked from the marketplace before you can use it on D&D Beyond.
You're also welcome to enter the content yourself using the homebrew tools, or to partial purchase specific backgrounds, races, subclasses etc - if you later decide to purchase the Player's Handbook, any partial purchased of content from it will be deducted from the cost (so you don't lose any money by partial purchasing).
I just bought the Dungeons & Dragons vs. Rick and Morty, where it was supposed to contain everything to play, including 5 premade characters...
BUT, all characters are in PDF versions. I bought the digital version on DnD Beyond to use it digital sheet, but ok. That was my first frustration but replicate the characters not seem a huge deal, right? Wrong! Morty's character has the Urchin background, and guess what? I don't have the Players Guide to complement my gameplay...
To have the full character using all the features on DnD Beyond, I need to buy more stuff...
This angers me greatly!! I paid 49.95 dollars + tax for the hardcopy of the player's handbook when I first got into D&D and now you're telling me that I can't make my character on D&D beyond unless I go to the marketplace and spend another $30 dollars just for a stinky background because you guys don't have the decency to add an option for people who already spent money in your dice monopoly??? since when did D&D go from being an accessible home game to an enterprise who wants your money. Hooray Capitalism! Guess now I have something in common with my character, we both hate people who take our money.

No, you don't need to spend another $30 just for the background, you can go to the PHB Marketplace page, scroll down to the Additional Purchase Options, and buy just the Urchin background for $1.99.
(Short answer: D&D Beyond is not Wizards of the Coast, and they need to pay licensing fees to WotC, so they can't give access to licensed stuff for free.)

That is no longer true and thus your point became invalid. I do not think they should give us all stuff go for free (obviously they need to make cash to keep servers running) but they should give users who have physical copies access to the books on the site (they already got money from them).

D&D Beyond can be used for free and contains information from the following "free to use" sources published by Wizards of the Coast: D&D 5th edition SRD, D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, and Elemental Evil Companion.
Content from other sources, such as the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, or Monster Manual, will need to be purchased from the Marketplace or accessed via another user sharing content with you via their Master Tier Subscription.
