Why on earth are the digital book prices higher than physical copies? Shouldn't physical copies cost more? Since they require physical items to create/sell?
The MSRP of the physical books is $49.99 which D&D Beyond its considerably cheaper than. If Amazon or any other retailer wants to sell their stock for considerably less than MSRP, there's nothing Wizards of the Coast, and certainly nothing D&D Beyond, can do. A retailer, once they've purchased their stock, could sell it for a dollar if they wished.
The Player's Handbook, being the first printed book of this edition, is likely to be the most heavily discounted one available due to the nature of how physical retail works. But this won't affect D&D Beyond digital pricing.
The physical book is just the book content to be read.
The equivalent version on D&D Beyond is the Compendium Only version, which costs $19.99. This is significantly cheaper than the Amazon price.
The full price on D&D Beyond includes an extra $10 for all the character sheet, and other tools, integration being done for you. It also goes towards the cost of maintaining the free tools.
