I recently made a homebrew race for my bf to run during an upcoming game called Ascended Mimic (https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/595352-ascended-mimic) and as part of the race I wanted to give it a natural base AC of 12 since the mimic monster has an AC of 12 due to natural armor. And unlike the natural armor given by Lizardfolk, for instance, I wanted it to apply on top of any armor that the player put on since it's meant to represent the mimic's body being maleable and amorphous.
However, when setting the modifier of "Set - Armor Class" and giving it a bonus of 2, it doesn't seem to affect the outcome - unarmored the AC is still 10+dex and with armor it's just 10+dex+armor. Did I just use the modifier wrong or is this broken?
After you save the modifier, you must re-save the entire homebrew using the main he main [SAVE CHANGES] button located under “Basic Information.” That’s the only way the system will pick up those changes. After that, it can take up to 20 minutes for those changes to push through to the character sheet/builder.
That being said, I believe you want “Modifier: Bonus,” not “Modifier: Set.” Using the “Set” modifier will make their AC 12+ Dex all the time unless they are wearing armor with a better calculation, then that armor will replace the 12. If you use the “Bonus” modifier instead, it should add 2 to their AC.
I always save before checking the results, I was using the "Natural Armor" from the Lizardfolk race as a template which is where I got the "set" modifier from but I'll try using a "bonus".
As far as I can tell, using "set" doesn't actually do anything, I tried straight-up copying the Natural Armor from lizardfolk, one-to-one, and not even that worked. I'll keep you posted on how "bonus" works.
EDIT: Using bonus seems to work! Not sure why "Set" Doesn't seem to do anything. Thank you for the heads up!
Yes, I know, there is "Set - Unarmored Armor Class" which is what Lizardfolk uses, my homebrew race was using "Set - Armor Class", a different modifier. However, when I tried using the same one as Lizardfolk it still didn't seem to work - armor or none.
I know it works because I have used it. I know it works because it works for the Lizardfolk. The system we have access to for homebrew is the exact same system the Devs use to implement official content. If it works for them, it by default must work for us. And again, I have used it in the past and know for a fact that it works. 🤷♂️
Anyway, I’m glad that what you want is working now. Glad I could help.
Yeah, I did, not sure what was causing it to not work although I have a lot of other perameters in the custom class layout so maybe something was causing some sort of conflict. Important thing is that the bonus feature did end up working and I'm grateful for that!

“Set” does work, as proven by the Lizardfolk. But, if the character is wearing any armor it will override that bonus, as I stated in my first post.

I don’t know what to tell you, I know for a fact that the following works:
Modifier: Set->Subtype: Unarmored AC->Fixed Value: 2
