I'm trying to create a variant half-elf race. I copied one of the existing variants to get an idea of how to set it up before making my own, and while it's mostly done, I can't seem to have it set to make my variant choices replace Skill Versatility. I noticed with the other half-elf variant presets there's an option in the existing racial trait to select an existing trait to replace, but if I do the same with my own variant traits, the replace trait pull-down isn't there on the trait edit page. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
As well as this, I notice that with half-elf variants (not just homebrew, but official half-elf variants), it doesn't go into detail on what each individual choice does on the character sheet; it just shows the 'Half-Elf Variant' tab and says 'You can replace Skill Versatility with *insert the three options here*.' This is both under the Racial Traits tab and any skills with limited use. It would be nice for players to be able to reference what each selectable trait does on their character sheet, rather than just saying they can select them, especially with mine since I'm making my three traits brand new, not ones based on existing PC races.
Ran into this same issue today; I don't have SCAG, so I was trying to test out the Variant feature by building one of the Variant half-elves from there, but no way to swap out Skill Versatility
Trying to make a Variant Human today and running into the same issue- even if I make an exact port of the Variant Human that already exists, the Ability Score increase is not truly replaced but instead *added* to the one that already exists. While this could be fixed manually by subtracting -1 from all scores... I'd rather not.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I ran into this same issue when I copied the wood elf subrace. I left the Wisdom +1 modifier in place, and ended up with a +2 Wisdom modifier in the character builder. I had to delete the ASI modifier entry and create a new one to get it to work properly, Tedious to do with all 6 scores, but maybe a work around until they get this bug fixed?

Tried that, didn't fix the problem for humans it seems. The variant human has "+1 to two" and is added in *addition* to the ones humans already get- I cannot alter the base race, only add to it, with the variant race feature.
I've managed to resolve the issue in the meantime, I just copied an existing half-elf variant and the drop-down menu was there and working, so I just copied over everything I had to that, but it's good to know I wasn't the only one experiencing the issue. Hopefully this gets resolved soon.
Hi folks, thank you all for the feedback. I have been testing out what you report and believe I can shed some light on the difficulties.
When creating a homebrew race you can either create something from scratch or copy an existing race/subrace/variant.
When you go to create a variant of a Human and select the Variant Human in the second box, using that as a template, everything works correctly except one thing - the existing Ability Skill Increase is not marked to replace Human's existing Ability Skill Increase. There is a dropdown box where you can correct this yourself and then proceed to edit. This has worked perfectly for me, which I have tested through the character builder.
As for the elf example, I was also able to successfully replace Skill Versatility with a trait of my own through means similar to what I describe above, for a Variant Human's ASI.
I have made a horribly amateur image to explain this process. It should help with these specific examples, but also anyone trying to replace any existing traits with their variants. You can see it in the attachment.
Please let us know if I misunderstood or you need any further help. Feel free to post anything further on this thread HERE for everyone to see, contribute and learn from.
Hi Villain, thanks for responding. I understand the process, the problem is that when creating from scratch, the drop-down menu to select which existing trait to replace (the one in step 4 of your guide) isn't there. It was there when I copied an existing variant template (in my case, I copied the Aquatic Half-Elf variant, and it already had Skill Versatility selected to replace it with the swim speed increase).
As I said, I was able to work around it by simply copying and existing variant and using that as a template and copying over everything I already had, but it appears to be an issue when creating traits when making a variant from scratch. I figure this is a bug.
Thanks for the post, Villain, but I still can't get this to work. Here's what I'm doing:
-In the homebrew races section, I select the "Variant"
-I choose to make a variant of the Half-Elf and click "Create from Scratch"
-the next page has a place for name, description, etc. Nowhere on that page is the "is variant" checkbox you refer to
-When I get to where I can add traits, there is no dropdown for "Replace Base Race Racial Trait" anywhere on the page
If I've understood Killchrono's post correctly, they are reporting the same issue. In my case, I can't just copy the Aquatic Half Elf Variant (or any half elf variant), as I haven't purchased SCAG here.
Hunh, so I can't find the "is variant" checkbox or the "Replace Base Race Racial Trait" Dropdown when I try using the Variant Human as a template, either.
There is some multi-conditional logic wrapping the visibility of the IsVariant checkbox and the Replace Trait drop-down. VillainTheory is seeing it 100% of the time due to his elevated permissions. I'll review and adjust the logic on those conditional statements in the morning and push a fix.
