Now that they're being removed and replaced with Mp:MotM, what will happen to the magic items in the two books? Will they be included in the New book? Removed forever?
Edit: (I'm Specifically asking for those who haven't bought those magic items yet. I know the player races and monsters are being updated and added to Mp:MotM, but I Haven't heard anything about the magic items.)
(Edit: So, The answers I'm getting sound like a no. That's a shame. I Wish Pre-orders showed what you'd be getting so we could know this kind of thing in advance. Though the items seem to be for monster use only, so it's no real loss.)
For those who don't know:
Starting on May 16, you can acquire the streamlined and up-to-date creatures and character race options, as well as a plethora of exciting new content, by purchasing Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. On May 17, Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes will be discontinued from our digital marketplace.
Nothing you already own will be removed. Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes are only being discontinued from the marketplace. If you own either of those books, you will be still be able to access everything in them after the date they are discontinued.
Cool, but I'm asking what will happen to the magic items, for those who haven't bought them yet. If l want them, will l have to panic buy, or will they be included with Mp:MotM?
Looking through my physical copy of Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, I can only find the Infernal Tack item.
I am not sure how the other 5 items will be handled. I will enquire.
I have confirmed the following:
Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes will, after the specified date, no longer be available for sale (already purchased content will be unaffected)
Any option found in those books will therefore be unavailable to purchase
On the release date, Mordenkainen Presents: Monster of the Multiverse will go on sale
Any and all options found in that book will be available for purchase
So what you're saying is that those five items will be straight up unavailable for anyone joining the website after the 19th unless they have a friend with content share? That's messed up.

Leaving OGL 1.0(a) untouched and making SRD 5.1 CC-BY-4.0 is a great first step. The next is a promise to do the same for future editions. Here's a discussion thread on that.

Bear in mind that all of these magic items were only meant to be used by monsters; 4 of them flat out say that their effects can only be used by mind flayers or their thralls, and the other two have some leeway (not much, but some), but it still seems they were created mainly to explain why they showed up in creature statblocks rather than for players use...

I don't see how that changes anything. Losing access to this means that's material DMs can now no longer use if they didn't start playing before the old books were delisted from DDB unless they track down a physical copy of the book(s)

It depends on how much gets ported over from the old books to the new book. If the monster statblocks are written to include the items, then practically speaking nothing has changed in that regard. Mind you, I'll have to take a close look at what changes were made to see if that's the case or not.🤷♂️
Yeah, I think the only outlier is the Githyanki's silver sword, those things are iconic, going back to AD&D ... though even then I don't know whether one was a RAW magic item that could fall into PCs hands. MToF describes the extents to which Githyanki would go to recover the weapon ... and if the PCs could weather that sort of response, they probably didn't need the weapon.
My guess is also that these items will be coded into the creatures stat blocks, the Mind Flayer items maybe best seen as parts of a "thrall template", PCs aren't meant to have them so they should be treated as monster stat block features, not treasure. Though of course there's inspiration there for all sorts of homebrew for playing in the deep weird.

Re: Silver Swords: Ever since Fiend Folio, they have been desired items from both the Githyanki and Githzerai (but only the Githyanki had the special ones). You could make an argument bout how other folks would go to lengths to get...any weapon. Keraptis and Blackrazor is an example of that. So even if the players could grasp it for a short time, its fun to see it on a sheet for that moment. Living Armor is another one (although players can use it) that was usually attached to a [Tooltip Not Found] in 3rd edition, but that has a heavy price attached to it.
The Mindflayer items are good for DM's as examples of things only the bad guys can/should use. Homebrewing off them has value as well. I'm personally not affected by the change, but I think that those items should be availabe for single purchase and as a small bundle once the pair of books go out of print/production online.

Or if they just find the information on them online and make them as homebrew privately
Sure, but that argument works for literally every subclass, monster, race, magic item and more in existence. That is fully not the point here. We're talking about being able to use those items without resorting to piracy and custom homebrew.

14th level Artificers disagree
Well...there's restrictions here than even artificers can't ignore, unfortunately. Namely, the bits requiring attunement by a specific individual or a creature with psionic ability...
EDIT: Hell, I forgot that Artificers can't bypass alignment restrictions either. The only item they can really use here is the Mind Lash, so far as I can tell.
