Hi, my name is Carmello and as of recent I've been wanting to play DnD but decided not to buy the essentials or starter kit. I'm pretty much a novice who's going against conventional wisdom. Then to make it worse I'm supposed DM.
I just can't help to feel overwhelmed and although I do have some experience playing long ago( but never as Dungeon Master). I drink and am reluctant how much of it will come back to me. I guess I did play enough to have like a 5th level character with some not too nice fellows and remember feeling intimidated by the game. However I'm pretty sure the DM an old pal of mine skewed the rules a little towards the player and our playing style was very generous. I do remember my characters almost always having 18 strength.
What I did was get was the Magical Cards companion set with little artwork, the three core Rule books fifth edition and bought like a few sets of dice.
So I'm reading a little here and there but it's just too general and broad and am uneasy in how the books present the information. And to make matters worse I purchased the books when they were full price. And now they want me to setup a campaign. It may be my background but my thinking behind playing was that'd it'd be a cool way to get our social fix without, delving into each personal life's for me and my party. Or just sitting their having conversations we later regret. I can go into this more! But, anyways like I said I want to play again and would like some feedback. Maybe resources and just something to give me confidence so I don't look like a jerk and can get going with this already.
A good way to start is to read the Lost Mine of Phandelver, an introductory adventure from levels 1 through 5, that uses only the Basic Rules. It's made to be run and played by first-time players, and is still considered one of the best low-level adventures WOTC has made for 5e.
It's also free here on DDB! It should be under Sources > Adventures.
LMOP guides you through how to run a session, and the basic rules for D&D 5e are only a few pages and honestly all the rules you'll ever need. The other books provide more in-depth rules that only very rarely come up. The basic rules are also available for free here on DDB.
The Magic Item Cards are something you definitely won't need, but they are a nice accesory.
The DM screen Reincarnated is great, though, and has a bunch of stuff that comes with it that can be very useful, like the condition cards.
Hope that helps!

Leaving OGL 1.0(a) untouched and making SRD 5.1 CC-BY-4.0 is a great first step. The next is a promise to do the same for future editions. Here's a discussion thread on that.
I would encourage you to rethink your decision not to get the starter kit, especially if you can still get the Lost Mines of Phandelver. (There is a newer starter kit that is available now in Target stores in the US and will be released elsewhere in October: I’m not as familiar with it). The starter kit does a good job of holding a new DM’s hand and gradually increasing your confidence and independence as a DM. The pre generated characters that come with the adventure can be built here without spending any money, as they are all part of the free resources. (If you go this route, I can dig out the link to a thread that spells out how to build them here) some of the magic items would need to be purchased or homebrewed if using the character sheets here, but those can be purchased individuall when/as needed.
The rules for 5e are quit different than previous editions in places, so the fact that you don’t remember much about playing previously is not a hindrance.
If you can all go into it with the idea that you are learning a new game, it’s o.k. If things aren’t perfect, and that you will learn as you go, I think you will be fine. When I started as a DM, I ignored some of the rules that seemed overwhelming to me at first. I gradually added most of them back in as my confidence grew.
Well thanks I feel a little more confident. I have only glanced at the Lost Mines of Phendelver and have decided to just go with what already have. I think you just having the moral to play is what's most. When I was young I used to play through the night. So definitely a good attitude helps. Well I'm excited to play and appreciate the feedback. Will probably do a little more research before anything. I thank-you guys once more.
Take care

DDB is great, but it could be better. Here are some things I think could improve DDB
