I tried doing that for a rifle, but it does not appear for any of my characters, because I don’t have the source book for it in a digital copy.
You tried doing what? Making a homebrew item? If so, did you turn on homebrew for the character sheet? Did you uncheck the "proficient" filter when you looked for it?
Well that’s their own fault for not working with wizards directly. If they want to get paid more then they should.
Not how it works, Bub.
It is how it is because of WotC, D&D Beyond get no say. And yet, WotC has most definitely favoured D&D Beyond more than any other of the official toolset.
At the end of the day, WotC won't take a paycut, so free digital versions will not be possible.

I did some investigation and found out why. Pretty much the books are distributed by a different company than beyond so neither make same profit. It sucks but I understand

Bottom line is that competitors like Roll20 can offer you pretty much all the source material and on top of that add an interactive map for DMing together with a non-beta encounter tool. Their website is less polished but if they can offer all this content without charging anything simply based on people using their $5 subscription for a complete service for encounters, maps, API access, content sharing...
While on D&DBeyond I can only pick one Cleric domain and choose between 2 feats? Is "pay or go away" the only thing DNDBeyond have to offer?
You get the Basic Rules free and you get what site tools they offer. This is the same with Roll20.
If you want more content, you have to buy it. This is the same with Roll20.
Roll20 tools are better designed as a VTT. This means they offer maps and tokens that will work with their VTT service. D&D Beyond is not a VTT, it is designed as a character sheet service and compendium. Roll20 is better at the maps and token and things for running the game as a VTT but the character sheet is flawed, their character builder tool is laughably inadequate and looking anything up as needed is often a hassle, especially if you're running a homebrew game. This is because Roll20 is a system agnostic tool for running a visual game. D&D Beyond has a fantastic character sheet for digital play with a lot more complex automation, and it's a breeze to look anything up which can be done in multiple ways conveniently with direct search bar, specific search pages, the source compendium and with crosslinking. While it offers all the same artwork, it is not configured for easy use as a VTT so trying to run a game solely with D&D Beyond will be difficult and importing stuff can be messy without using external 3rd party extensions. This is because D&D Beyond is intended primarily as a "companion" reference guide, not a game-running tool. It's purpose is to make it easier to track changes to your character and to look up rules.
In other words, expecting Roll20 or D&D Beyond to act like the other is pointless. They're different products with different intentions on what service is provided. Roll20 is better as a VTT. D&D Beyond is better as a compendium and character sheet tracker. They're different.
Roll20 offers similar pricing to D&D Beyond on some books and is more expensive for others. D&D Beyond offers similar pricing to Roll20 on some books, with a cheaper compendium only option, and is cheaper in general on other books. D&D Beyond also offers piecemeal purchasing making it far easier on your budget, as you only need to buy what you specifically need. D&D Beyond is most assuredly better on the wallet, if D&D Beyond's service (as a compendium/sheet tracker) is what is preferred over Roll20's VTT service.
Your comparison and premise is flawed completely as you don't seem to understand they're different products.

They already get enough from all the people who waste their money on dice.
It would be interesting to know how you know that. Do you have copy of their sales reports or access to their banks to see and measure their income?
Also, if people buy dice and like using them, it's not a waste of money. Let's not pretend you have any authority to dictate what is or is not a waste of other people's money.

If you want access to the books on D&D Beyond, you have to pay for them.
If you just want to use the character creator with the options in your physical books, you can recreate each race, subclass, feat, spell and magic item as private homebrew.
But what if you can't figure out how to homebrew something more complicated, like the Battle Master Fighter?

This is a lame answer, you technically pay for the subscription, the books are completly unrelated
The answer was that the subscription does not get you the source books though, which is correct. So what's lame about it?
