Yeah, I understand (although I am by no means an expert but I'll take the compliment, thanks 😂). But most of the changes are slight wording differences or being added to more spell lists. Most changes I'm seeing (and yes, I have the book) are mino
Out of curiosity, how much of change do you see with the magic items? (Particularly the +1/+2/+3 ones.)
For my own sake, I'm still copying the whole PHB spell list. (Big thing I like is having the wording right there when selecting through the list and for ease of search when wanting to reference one.) But wondering if there's some ways to cut down on the magic item list.
Noting this is responding to VitusW post 243, because the quote tool sucks.
"1: We don't know which spells are being updated. That's not easily accessible information. So at the moment if we want to have the easy-copy for any that change, we do have make them all."
Yes. We do.
There's youtube videos, reddit threads, webpages, and more all detailing the differences for all spells. There's a lot of people who have been given legitimate advance copies and have been sharing what changes there are.
Can you provide a link to this comprehensive list of spell changes, or do you mean we have the ability to spend time scouring the internet and compiling our own list?
As for the rest of your post, I accept that your intentions are helpful, and I'll defer to you on how long it cantake to homebrew the spells if done now while there's old versions to copy. I do think however that you're discounting
a) peoples ability & willingness to try using the homebrew tool (it will certainly look complicated to those that haven't used it before),
b) the fact that most people won't even know about the changes until they've already switched (as I doubt they'll be a proper announcement) so will have nothing to copy from
and c) your own knowledge of what has & hasn't changed, everyone else is going to have to go through those 380+ spells and work out the differences themselves, unless they come across a list elsewhere. Even then, there's differing opinions over what counts as a "minor change", I expect many lists will only mention those considered to be significant changes. This is particularly a problem for those of us who had no intention of switching and therefore haven't been keeping up with news about the new rules.
Also, and again I accept this isn't your intent, but it's incredibly frustrating to be complaining about paid features being removed, then have someone telling you "you're exaggerating, it'd only take me x amount of time to do the work myself", as if we're making a fuss over nothing.
EDIT: To be clear I do understand you're not on WotC's side here. My main point in arguing this is that I do think it'll be a bigger time commitment to homebrew the spells (and then items) than it might seem. And while you're not on WotC's side, there are others that will say "It's a short time to homebrew it all. Ergo it's fine." And I do disagree with the logic others use, which is why I'm debating the time.
And your guides will definitely be working overtime helping others when the change hits. Thank you for your involvement with the community and all the homebrew help you've offered over the years.
Didn't notice the edit.
Yeah, it will be time consuming. I'm not trying to say it won't be or dismiss the confusion that will occur. I'm just trying to balance out the kneejerk reaction some people are having. But you're right I think I'm going to be making a lot of guides and videos when this all hits (although hoping WotC will see the responses here and it's not too late for them to change course). Most of it will be easier than people think but yeah the homebrew tools are seriously daunting when you're trying them for the first time. But, I and several others like Sposta and Mairondil and more are here to help out. Maybe D&D Beyond should pay us 🤣
I think I sometimes forget how different the perspective is.
Thank you for the kind words. It's very appreciated.

I haven't checked what items are in the PHB yet, and most will be in the DMG which isn't released to anyone yet. I don't expect there to be a lot of changes to the magic items, really, as even currently they are mostly self-contained things and very few are problematic in the way spells can be. But we'll have to see.

So what I'm seeing is the best option if we want to keep using the current spells and magic items that we originally paid for to use on our sheets and have quick references for is to go off this site, search for a video or site that actually did a spell by spell verification on changes that WotC hadn't had taken down due to copyright or something. Then make a list of the ones they changed, and make a homebrew copy of them for ourselves and our players. Then we have to do this again for more magic items when the DMG releases.
For a company claiming to want to give us options, they are really making their customers put in unnecessary effort with the options they are given us.
The easiest thing to do is to pick your VTT of choice. The majority of VTTs have some form of 5th edition module. Import your character sheet now into the VTT, use their 5e module, and add whatever you need to that package.
I recommend FoundryVTT and the official d&d 5e module. Then just build on that module, it has nice sheets, there's an importer tool made by the community, and unlike this service you own foundry forever and once you've downloaded content it is locally hosted so no one can take it from you or change it.
It's the same amount of work as homebrewing everything yourself and once you've done it you've moved off a bad service.
I’ve been playing D&D for almost a decade and while this does not engender any distaste for the system itself, it precludes beyond any doubt, myself ever giving D&D Beyond, WOTC, or Hasbro another solitary cent. My greatest hope is that this decision leads to such profit losses that the efficacy of fiduciary duty may be called into question.
Guess I’ll have to renew my subscriptions to Cyberpunk RED or Pathfinder 2…. Oh wait, they’re free.
Noting this is responding to VitusW post 243, because the quote tool sucks.

I haven't gone through that and compared it to the 2024 book to see how accurate it is or compare it to originals with a "homebrewing" mindset. I plan to, but I have some health issues pulling my focus at the moment.
a and b I've addresses in other posts. As for c well sure, but honestly, nobody needs to. They should only really be checking on as-needed basis, surely? Like my wizard is only going to be concerned with changes to wizard spells, and so on. DMs may need to check more, but I still don't see the need to go through everything all at once. Like a google search for the changes, a few minutes checking and you have a list of what ones have been changed. If your monster, PC or item or whatever is going to use a spell on that list - then you check for what was changed and if homebrew is even needed.
I mean it's definitely a shit time for all involved, and is going to cause confusion and take up your time. I just, as of yet, don't see it taking as long as people say.
And I apologise if I caused frustration. Not my intent. Just trying to keep expectations more realistic, not to diminish anyone's complaint.

If you want to make your copies before the 2024 releases then "homebrewing" is 3 clicks and a name change because you can instant-copy any spell, without needing to change anything other than the name.
In which case, employees of DDB, who get paid to make this a useful tool for people who pay a monthly subscription fee, should do that for us. Or, you know, just make 2014 a toggle-able selection on the character creation tool. Seems like they can't be bothered to do either, or have been expressly told by the people whose whole job is to look out for shareholder interests not to do it.
I agree.
My point isn't about what "should"
My point is a correction that making your own homebrew copies isn't "many hours".
That's it. That's the only point I made.
I'm not on D&D Beyond's side here. I'm just making corrections to misinformation or clarifying expectations.
I'm sorry if my post came across as a personal attack. That's not how I meant it. I'm not trying to pile on you here. I just wanted to make clear that no amount of work on the consumer's part should be necessary here. I think what's happened, for a lot of people, is they took your "it won't take as long as you think" comment not as a comfort, which I can now see is how it was meant, but as a condoning of this absolutely deplorable business decision by WoTC. Hopefully your multiple clarifications of that fact will sink in for future posters. :D I apologize if my post had an angry tone. I'm angry, but not at you, so that shouldn't have happened.

this is a terrible idea. this breaks a multi-year campaign in progress, and I'm sure plenty more than just mine. you are stealing money from people who bought 2014 edition rules. WOTC should never see business again if this is how they treat their userbase
Just unsubscribed my master tier. Hitting the pocket book is the best chance we have to get them to rethink this malicious move. I can't imagine how they don't get hit with a class action, regardless of what their T&Cs state.
Better screen shot all of it before the change it
