My group is about to try D&D Beyond for the first time tomorrow, and I was wondering if you guys had any hints on how to use it. I'm a player in my group, and our normal thing is to have a bunch of PHBs around the table, and maybe two of us can tell people which chapter to turn to when they need info. Almost always, it's spell descriptions, but often it's class skills or racial abilities, and sometimes even item stats. How do you recommend I set up my iPad? Should I have a bunch of tabs open, or just one? Can I try to anticipate our needs and set up a suite of tabs for that? i'm pretty sure Chrome allows that.
Look, for now DD Beyond is just for general rules, spells, items and monsters
Races, classes are not implemented, not yet. There will be in Phase 2.
All that said, there is no need to set up anything with DD Beyond. Just make sure that you are familiar with the app, but it is pretty straighforward to use. Click on the section you want, use filters and you are done.
What I was hoping for was that they would be able to use it themselves. I could leave it on the table and whoever needs it can pick it up and key in what they need. I was wondinering if it was more effective, in orther users' experience to try to set up tabs for other players, or if I should just leave a home tab and let them navigate from there.
Currently with Phase 1 you'll be able to look up basic rules from the Compendium, Magical Items, Monsters, and Spells - and from your description it sounds like the Spells tab is going to get the most mileage (probably with the Compendium next). Be aware that currently only content from these categories that are found in the SRD (System Reference Document) are included, so not all spells, monsters, and items are going to be able to be searched.
Until the Character Builder in Phase 2 in added, class abilities aren't currently available in Beyond, so you'll till need a PHB or 2 around to reference those.
If you are using a phone/tablet, I'd personally recommend just having the webpage open and whenever you need to search for something different navigate around; if using a laptop though, I'd say open your commonly used spells and rules on different tabs and go from there.

i think you can leave a tablet "for the table" and let them use it.
