 Cooler than having AI in D&D

I hate GenAI in general, so absolutely no way would I ever use it for D&D.

I’d rather:

- Eat an entire bag of Sour Patch Kids doused in lemon juice in less than 2 minutes;

- Go swimming for an hour in a pool of D4s;

- Jump 100 feet into a pool of Costco Croissants;

- Write an entire Harry Potter fanfiction that centers on Crabbe;

- Or break 300 pairs of sunglasses and walk across hot tiles sprinkled with the shards.

I would never use it for dming maybe for generating a NPC name

I feel it's worth pointing out, respectfully, that for decades there have been perfectly good tools for randomly generating NPC names that don't use LLMs and thus don't carry any of the baggage associated with them. I'm personally a fan of this one, which is very versatile and which D&D Beyond itself used to use in the character builder. You might consider using something like that next time instead.

There's plenty of non-AI NPC generators out there for free. Xanathar's is good but not needed. 

I love the idea of a DM that is ready and willing to run games for me.  But that only goes as far as a human DM.

I've tried out various AI at it's ability to bounce ideas off to build out my campaigns, but largely it's only contribution was either to provide fairly stock ideas that I could have gotten from reading a sourcebook, or to wander completely off the described path and add so much junk I lost track of what it was trying to do (or it did).

I use AI a ton is software development, because that's an area where the current stuff is suited to.  It's very precise and testable structures within a defined syntax and framework.  And even then you have to course correct regularly or it just goes off on a tangent.

Anything that requires conceptual creativity or social elements... the current generations aren't even anywhere near capable.  Maybe Mythos is, but it's locked up in a vault and I'd even have my doubts then.

Until the AI gets cognitive conceptualism down, it's not going to be better than a human with a random table, and likely much worse.

There is no "positive use case" for generative AI.

Have some integrity AND creativity. Introspective would be good for you after posting something so thoughtlessly.

While the energy cost of AI is significant (about 4.4% of total US electricity consumption in 2023, which is the latest year there's solid figures for, and predicted to hit 9% by 2028), it's not high enough to say we shouldn't use it -- that comes down whether it provides benefits commensurate with its cost.

Given the quantity of low value slop washing over the internet, there's a good arguments that certain uses of generative AI don't provide commensurate benefits and may in fact just make life worse for everyone, but that's not really an environmental argument.

It’s not necessarily the energy cost itself that’s the issue, but the water used (which isn’t as large as some people lead you to believe), and its effects on property values. Plus, most people just despise AI so they don’t want more data centers
