I got this response on a Support ticket I submitted referencing this thread:
Not every thread is going to get an individual response. The team have said on other threads, on the discord, and in dev updates that we'd love to see actions being something that can be added to items - it requires a system overhaul, we do not commit ETAs, if and when something is ready, we'll announce.
The feedback from the forums is logged through our internal feedback portal. I'd also note, there is actually staff posts on that thread. We aren't going to reply to each request individually, it's all tracked and logged.,
It's honestly ridiculous that item action functionality hasn't been implemented in this many YEARS of constant community request, especially when the method for doing so is already in play via homebrew feats. Here's yet another request from someone who pays you monthly, not that I expect it to matter because disappointment has just become the norm.
The worst part of theis thread, is that I get periodic updates from dndbeyond saying "check put whats going on with dndbeyond" just to reread this thread where nothing has happened.
Still not a thing as far as I can tell. Trying to make some unique items that give actions/bonus actions to change the weapon, and some that trigger saves to deal damage in an area.
Posting here as another DM who needs this feature. Not having this feature is going to make things a lot more difficult to remember for my players.
So many options would open up... Think of all the cool things you could implement: - As a bonus action you can switch places with another character who is wearing the other half of this necklace - As an action you can throw the ring and it explodes dealing X amount of damage, reappearing on your finger the next turn - As a reaction you can activate the effects of the protector bracelet reducing all incoming damage done to you this turn to 0 - Or even casting spells as an action where charges don't come into play!
The lack of implementation of this feature has me worried about the direction of dndbeyond and one D&D. How modular is this system going to be? The ability to add your own homebrew or 3rd party content was the big selling point of DDB for me. I wonder if they will move away from this. Is customization going away from a DM perspective?
What I have seen in recent times is that they are peddling mainly features no one really asked for, but features they can easily monetize. And I get it. They have a big subscription base of customers, it is more effective to have them buying your dice or whatever garbage they are shoveling our way, instead of giving us a super useful feature for creating our own content...
They have no incentive to implement the feature and at this point I am almost locked into their ecosystem through the sunk-cost fallacy(I own almost everything in terms of actual content (books and adventures))
And also there's no alternative. This is still the best digital service that gives you most things you need. But without competition they begin to not care much about what users actually want.
Not having this feature is making it more difficult for ease of access when creating homebrew magic items for my campaign.
I'm actually quite shocked at how long this has been requested for and has still not been implemented.
I would understand if it was all a completely free service but when you have people paying in the hundreds for your content, you should listen to what the players want. Especially if you know it is a sort after feature.
Every time we implement magic items from a new sourcebook, and we aren't able to make them fully functional, I ask about this and when we can get around to it. 😉
That said, there are lots of cool things that the dev teams are working on that are going to be awesome.
Is this still "still planned"? It has been years now and still no signs that its even being worked on. Custom Ammo is also still broken after all of these years. Honestly at this point, hire freelancers, I bet someone would do it for the price of a single book.

pretty please.... I'd much rather have this feature than the digital dice or character portraits.

Different teams work on those features. But at the end of end day it all revolves around how dndbeyond chooses to spend its money...

I know it takes a long time for a Dev team to complete tasks, but we believe in you, lets see this feature LIVE!
Someday... Still hopeful!
So happy we can all come together and agree, that this should've happened a while back...
Welp. Didn't realize this feature wasn't a thing yet. That sucks.

Must be a real complicated feature, huh? rollin' on 3 years.

Please... can we get this up the roadmap?

For well designed homebrew features, I'd be much more willing to pay an access fee over buying dice.
Please add this
