I got the Essentials Kit today, and am trying to scan the QR code in order to access the additional adventure contents, but cannot find any place to scan the code. Is that not yet implemented, or am I just missing something??
The QR code contains the URL with the redemption code built in; you don't need the DDB app to redeem it, just any app that can scan QR codes. Doing so will automatically take you to the redemption page with your code already entered. You can download a dedicated QR code scanner app, or use the Lens feature of the google camera app, or just open the camera app on iOS and point it at the code (it should just read the code automatically)
1 I already used the key to unlock Dragon of Icespire Peak. Is there still additional content to unlock with the QR code?
2 I can't seem to find the pre-generated sidekicks that come on the cards in the essentials box. All I've been able to find are the generic ones. Are the pre-generated sidekicks part of DoIP here on D&D Beyond?

Based on what Adam has said in recent videos, I think the generic ones are all that are available here. You could homebrew them to add the details from the cards. It’s disappointing, I know, but they may be operating under limits WOTC dictated. All the publicity I’ve seen has talked about the adventure being available, here, not the entirety of the kit. Or, it may be that fully building out the sidekick system was something that wasn’t doable before the release of the Essentials kit. (Plus there are indications that a more robust sidekick system may still be published at a later date).
So they use QR codes to redeem content, but their app doesn't have its own built in QR Scanner. They expect you to download a separate unaffiliated app before you can redeem the content? What a horrible design!
A lot of services provide QR codes without their own QR reader (Xbox Live for example, after they discontinued kinect scanning) as QR has become a 2d barcode standard
You probably shouldn't need to download a separate app, iOS and google camera both scan QR codes naively.

You don't need to use the QR code to redeem the unlockable content or the 50% off coupon. Key codes are provided that can be entered manually. The alphanumeric codes can be entered here to unlock the content.
The top QR code (which doesn't have an alphanumeric code accompanying it) is just a link to the New Player Guide. Here is a link to that if you need it.

Every smartphone I've ever owned has had a built in scanner app and QR codes are pretty common. I can't say I see that as horrible design, but to each their own...

Yeah, I agree. This is very standard. All over the place, there are posters, brochures, and even software that just offer a QR code, expecting the user to use any scanner. It's just expected that a user either has one on the phone, or that they are able to download one from the appropriate app store. Unless QR codes are being used heavily in the context of doing other things with the app, there would be no reason at all to build one into the app. Given that D&D Beyond has not (to my knowledge) used QR codes at all (or, if at all, only sporadically) until now, there's no reason to expect there to be a QR scanner built into the app. Maybe if deals like this become more commonplace, it would be nice.
In order to provide a nice user experience, they don't have to embed a custom-made QR code to their app. All they should do is write a line of instruction near the QR code: "Open your smartphone's camera and point it to this code. If your smartphone doesn't handle QR codes, please download a QR Code reader."
Just because QR codes are common nowadays, let's not make assumptions everyone should know as if this was taught in school -- remember there are young kids and elder seniors that might be out of the loop. For all that matter, they might not even ever had a smartphone (but in this case, odds are that they just want to play the tabletop game and are not interested in D&D Beyond).

The QR code is just a scanable URL to take you to a website. The ddb app is not a web browser and doesn't ask permission to use camera.
And as other people have mentioned, the QR codes are not required to redeem it.
I just got the Essentials Kit. I scanned the codes but it just takes me to the D&D Beyond home page.
What am I missing?
Click on “Marketplace” above; then “redeem a key”. There you can enter the code from the box: Note, the font doesn’t distinguish between lower case Ls, uppercase Is oand the number 1 or between the number 0 and the letter O. So you might have to use a few combinations.
The first QR code says "Access additional adventure content to continue the story into higher levels of play"; yet I scan the code and am only taken to the website, and the additional adventures are there but I am asked to purchase them. Does the QR code give then for free, or I still have to buy them?

You may need to download an app for scanning at codes (Google has one).
Yeah I just downloaded the app today specifically to scan the QR codes, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere in the app to do so.

The DDB app or an app for reading QR codes? Because one of these two things will not help you redeem your adventure.
I have a couple of questions.
1 I already used the key to unlock Dragon of Icespire Peak. Is there still additional content to unlock with the QR code?

I don't know about the sidekicks, but there should be a separate code for 50% off the Player's Handbook on DDB

I think side kick systems are still being worked on. There may be another feature they need to update to support them.
