The tools on this site are very appealing and I almost bought the Sourcebook Bundle.
As one who has all the books hard-copy already I was still willing to re-buy for the digital format and tool use, but I understand a subscription is needed for access to the full set of tools.
I understand how the service is constructed and I get it.
My feedback is, for me, the need for the subscription as well as the books just held me back.
If the use of tools and subscription benefits were unlocked for those who purchase a significant bundle (in my case the source book bundle) I would have bought in. I get the subscription, and for those not buying significant content I think it reasonable.
If you had considered unlocking tool functionality for those who bought significant content I would have been on-board.
The only "tool" a sub unlocks is the encounter builder alpha test. You also unlock unlimited character sheets and ability to add public homebrew to your collection. I personally do not feel it is necessary to have any of these.
A master tier sub unlocks everything the hero tier does, plus enables content sharing, allowing you (and others) to share all the books they have purchased. Each play group only needs 1 of these.
Yeah, @DxJxC is right, the only tools they 'lock' behind subscription are the ones in alpha testing. This is to filter the test user base by those who are more active/invested in DDB (figuratively and literally).
Once the encounter builder comes out of alpha, it'll likely be made available to everyone. It'll certainly be made available once it's out of beta. The other tools; the character builder, homebrew tools and twitch overlay, are available without subscription.
The subscription is only for 3 things:
Removing adds
Unlimited character slot limitations
(Master tier only) - sharing the content you've bought with people in a campaign
Query - is the 6 character limit 6 concurrent characters or 6 total ever.
If I could have up to 6 and then delete one to make room for a new one this would be nice. But if it is a total of 6 characters made ever this is quite the drawback.
I have searched for a clarification on this and come up short.
It's 6 concurrent characters; deleting one will open up a new slot.
Also, if you sub, go over 6, and then cancel your sub, you won't lose access to any of your characters. You won't be able to make more until you have less than 6, but even if you have 100 characters, you'll be able to access them all
Also something to note - D&D Beyond understands that many folks have purchased hardcopies of the books. We do have homebrew tools that allow you to enter in the content from those books yourselves, rather than purchasing them again - it just means you have to spend time rather than money to get the subclasses/feats/spells, etc.(Also remember you cannot publish homebrew you've entered from books)

But, great site and good luck.

Thank you!
That indeed greatly reduces the need for a sub if I already unlock the books.
And with tools open to everyone once fully released this helps a great deal too.
Thanks for the clarifications.

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of
They are including a D&D beyond unlock code for the adventure in the new starter set. I hope that’s a sign of the future.
