So, I'm a total newbie here, having just bought Essentials Kit. I just love Dnd Beyond and the character creation function.
But, questions.. when I create for instance a cleric, I can't choose the War Domain, and wizards can't take school of transmutation. Fighters can't choose Eldritch knight, and there could probably be other choices I can't make in the other classes.
Shouldn't these choices be there since they are in the Essentials Kit rulebook? Or am I missing something? It points me to Marketplace, but I can't see what I should do there.
I don't have the Essentials Kit Rulebook, so I need to ask to clarify: are those subclasses just mentioned in the Rulebook, or are the mechanics for them spelled out?
If you hadn't mentioned their presence in the Rulebook, I would have just explained that only the subclasses in the Basic Rules and the SRD are available for free and that the rest of them have to be purchased. But, if they are in the Essentials Rulebook, that's a different matter.
I will note that when I've heard staff talk about being able to redeem the code here they have talked about getting the adventure for free; and the adventure is the only thing that can be purchased here from the Essentials Kit (although the sidekicks from the cards have been added to the adventure sourcebook here). The Rulebook itself is not available here as a "sourcebook." That's been explained by DDB staff being because it contains nearly the same info as the Basic Rules. (The rulebook from the Starter Set isn't included here, either). But if the Rulebook for the Essentials kit includes non Basic Rules/SRD subclasses, that creates a thornier issue. Hopefully staff can respond to this thread to clarify things.
In the meantime, if you are willing to spend a bit more, you can purchase just the subclasses that you would like from the Players Handbook or other source books. They are $1.99 each, and anything you spend on elements for a given "book" is discounted from the book's price if you decide to purchase it later. So, for example, you could purchase the three subclasses you mentioned for a little under $6. The cost of the PHB would drop to roughly $24. (The cost of the PHB subclass bundle would also drop by $6.)
And, yes, these classes are spelled out, with details and tables, hence my confusion. But buying them seems like a good option if there are no plans to add the Essential kit as a source.
I thought I heard that the essential kit also included a discount for tge PHB on DDB. Am I misremembering or heard wrong?
Yes, there’s a 50% off coupon for the PHB as part of the physical kit. I’d forgotten about that when I posted above. That’s probably part of why they didn’t include the non-SRD subclasses with the adventure purchase here.
