I like xp. It was good 30 years ago, it's good now.
And as a minor sticking point, it's actually three clicks to change - click the droplist, select xp, and a follow-up confirm. That's a bit tedious on a tablet. If it was just a single toggle, it wouldn't be so bad, but as is, I think it's bad UI design.
I got my info from players who run the game, play the game and talk about it. I have not spoken to one gamer about leveling in 5th edition that talked about anything but XP. I figure probably a hundred or more at recent conventions and the gaming community and every one talks XP. I am enlightened that your encounters are the opposite. Interesting. Thanks.
I will say that I am a salty old D&D GM. Been gaming for 35+ years (talk about a milestone!). Perhaps that is also why I have not even looked at an alternative to XP. I didn't realize at first that there was an option. However the players in my game (5 guys) didn't mention it or suggest it either. And they range from first year gamers to my experience level. No pun intended.
Agree with the sentiment of the OP - XP should definitely be the default. Feels like Milestone was chosen simply because someone decided alpha order was the way to go.
As a DM (for 35+ years) I give out XP for all kinds of story activity and game participation. XP for discovery and perhaps an important social encounter. It's my game and I have a limitless bag of holding filled with XP! I even have a system called PERKS where I can give PLAYERS XP. If a player draws the story forward with good questions or descriptions they may get a Perk. You always get a Perk for rolling a natural 1 or 20 on an action. You may get a Perk from me for telling a good joke that relates to the game and the situation. Whatever I think is you being a GOOD PLAYER I give Perks. A PERK is worth 5 times your characters level. I give them out in real time. I may say "It's great that you know you're character so well Ron and are aware of the class features - take a Perk". At the end of the session the players total their Perks, do the math and give the XP to their PC. That's the basics of Perks. If Perks are used you must give perks to players based on THEIR style of play not a general system. This way all players can earn Perks for what they do best.
I guess I am using XP and MilestoneISH awards. I do give XP for events besides monster killing but I don't actually SET Milestones. I think it makes the game more linear. I like to run a bit of an open sandbox. However, I will admit, I wasn't as clear as I thought I was about Milestone awards. And I started this thread. Some of the posts enlightened me. And re-reading my own replies. Milestone is used in many of the printed adventures.
Dude, did you necro a 2 year old thread just to say how much of a non issue it was? Clearly it was a non-issue, no one had said anything in two years...
Adding my vote for xp as default.

But, whatever is best for YOUR game is best.

XP by default as well.
And I mostly use Milestones.
I want DnDBeyond to default to the books, please.
Also, can we get our preferences saved? Then "just one click to change it" would truly be just one click instead of once per character.

this is such a non issue. also, everyone I know prefers Milestone over XP. Especially DM's. less work to do.
