Dulahey, I agree completely. If a piece of content is behind a paywall, you should not also see ads on that content. Period. Drawing an arbitrary distinction between "compendium content" and "listings" (which still link to content that's behind said paywall) is just weaselly. If you say that buying the PHB lets you browse all the PHB content ad-free, then that's what should happen. It shouldn't depend on the specific path you followed to get to that content.
I will also point out that "Feats listing" is in the PHB table of contents, under "Customization Options." Arguing that it's somehow separate from the rest of the PHB content is just... bizarre.
I agree Daddy. To me, this isn't even a discussion. This is an error, plain and simple. If you have paid for the PHB, any page you go to, either manually or searched, that is in the PHB, should be ad free. Period. This whole discussion of which path did you use to view it is asinine. That sounds like poor design to me. I do not care if that page also happens to be in the free rules.
If this does not change, I will absolutely demand a refund.
I mean, I probably won't demand a refund. I do find this whole discussion incredibly frustrating, as people are bending over backwards to justify ads on PHB content. Ultimately, I expect the convenience of the digital format will trump the annoyance of the ads, and I am looking forward to the app. Having said that, it should go without saying that ads are attached only to free content. If the system isn't smart enough to distinguish between free content and paid content, that's a problem with the system -- not a problem with the people pointing it out.
EDIT: and to clarify, I think the way the system works currently is that it looks for "compendium" in the URL. If it doesn't find it, it throws up an ad, even if the source material is actually verbatim from the PHB.
This just appeared after I clicked on the compendium button. This crap is popping up on almost every page I go to. I am in the middle of a game shop with over 100 people, including children, playing Magic and D&D. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I've paid near $400!!!
It really looks like that's adware. I'm pretty sure that isn't something coming from the site itself. I'd like you to check your system, then if that doesn't fix it, please contact the D&D Beyond support site.
I think what it all comes down to is a matter of opinion. I look at this and think it is fully justifiable to put an ad on any screen outside the compendium. The feats listing page is a link for the Character - Feats section. I dont find it difficult to separate the compendium as a resource and the other filters and listings as separate resources. But that is just my opinion. The compendium is a digital source that you are buying, like a beefed up PDF, but the other links and tools outside of it are essentially like any other reference website. Dnd beyond doesn't need to provide the outside tools, but they do. The tools are their work and they put an ad on it. Some people think that is ok, others do not.
Did you see the page I linked above? It’s just a single page with the PHB description of the Lucky feat. And they have an ad on it. Surely that isn’t something that you think qualifies as “their work”? It’s just straight up PHB content.
PHB content is https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/phb/customization-options#Feats It is a straight page with all the feats listed. The same as you would see in the book. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/feats Is dndbeyond's work to put all of the different source books contents together so you do not need to navigate each book individually to find the information you want. Same with the Classes listings. Rather than have multiple locations on the website, dndbeyond has given you the ability to go to one page https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/classes and see all the classes you have available and their relevant information. When you are not viewing the source book directly in the compendium, then you are viewing a reference website that is helping consolidate and give you the relevant information.
We have different views of the site and the capabilities. I have expressed my thoughts and you yours. Rather than continue to go back and forth about the technicalities and whatnot I will leave what I said as it stands. Since this was moved to a feedback thread I think we have both done well on expressing our ideas.
I just pushed out a deploy which should hopefully remove these. Try to re-load some of those pages you were having issues with and see if those problematic ads are gone now.

Thank you Beyond team! Nearly every time there is a matter of opinion difference, you come down on the side of making the experience better for the user, even when asked by someone who is indignant and/or rude (not meaning this case). And in the end nearly no one thanks you for changing policy to benefit them. Thank you D&D Beyond, you are getting a really bad rap and are a pretty awesome company. Keep it up.

I'm on my work iPad. This thing is locked down like Ft. Knox...
EDIT: And things like this aren't appearing on anything else.
