Hello Mighty Adventurers!
We're happy to announce that we’re starting to send invites to the alpha version of the Player app! The invites are going to be distributed among the subscribers who:
The apps are distributed using Testflight for iOS and Google Play Closed Track testing.
You will be able to download the app only with the link provided in the invite to the device which is signed in with the account you provided when enrolling to the alpha test.
Invites will be sent in batches over the next two weeks. If you haven’t received an invite or any email from us, please wait patiently. It is possible that you are going to be invited in future batches.
What is initially available in the alpha version of the app?
The app allows you to sign in into your DDB account, display the list of your characters and select them to see their character sheets.
You can also use the app to swiftly open the character sheet on the website without leaving the app to access the information and capabilities which are not available natively in the app yet.
Even though the version of the app is by no means a finished product, we would love to let you play with the app and provide us with your feedback.
Currently, the app allows you to access character data in view-only mode. You cannot display detailed descriptions of the stats nor edit them. These features are being built at this point and we are going to issue regular updates with these features in place.
Capabilities available right now:
What are we working on right now?
We are focusing on providing basic editing capabilities which will allow you to edit Hit Points, conditions, spell/pact/limited slots and other fundamental stats. We are also fixing bugs and providing improvements to the general experience.
We are also very much interested in your feedback and promise to analyse every suggestion and comment. We may not be able to address them right away but they certainly will not go unnoticed.
What will likely not be available in this development cycle but is still on our backlog?
Our ultimate goal is to let you access and edit nearly all the details which you can interact with on the web. After the basic editing capabilities are in place, we (most probably) are going to:
Let you display the Description, Notes and Extras of your character
Add detailed descriptions for the most important items
How to provide feedback?
As always, your feedback is valued as a huge driving force behind what we do at D&D Beyond. After you give the Player app a try, you can share your feedback in three different ways:
Thanks again for your help - we look forward to the updates to come!
It would be handy to swipe left or right to get to the next page rather than having to click manually.
Different colored screens would be cool
On equipment, it would be handy to have the QTY and Cost(GP) scroll down with you
Same thing for the spell page. Having the modifier, spell attack, save DC scroll down with you
a sorting button for your characters.
love the app!
I like what I see so far. I can’t update limited use abilities (I.e. divine sense, LoH, etc). Presumably, that’s a later enhancement
I would love to have the ability to filter and sort the character list like you do on the site.
And I second the request for swiping between pages.
Also, can't wait to get editing functionality!
Thanks!
Check out all my important links here.
May we live in Less Interesting Times
Thank you very much!
We are certainly going to give the scrolling items and colour palletes a thought!
Editing limited use items is a must-have and will be added soon.
Swiping is very seriously being considered. Sorting is likely to be added but it is not on the immediate roadmap at this point.
The functionality as described is there and gives a good glimpse at how the character is currently laid out. I agree with fishstiks101 that on the spell page, the DC and attack should scroll down with the spells to mitigate unnecessary scrolling. It’ll be great when we can click spells and have them pop up with a description!
I created a new character and loved how it seamlessly jumped back into the app when I clicked “View character sheet” so that functionality is already pretty slick. Once we can edit them in app this will be FANTASTIC for showing up to a one shot session and throwing a chapter together quickly just to play the game.
The app also updates extremely quickly when I make changes on the web. I don’t know how that’ll be when the site is stressed, but it worked great this morning. Can’t wait to see how it progresses over the coming months.
Obviously this is a question for once there is more ability to edit within the app - I assume that once you go back online, any changes made will sync back to the servers and be reflected in the web-based version?
Correct, that's the planned scenario.
It is possible that certain areas will not be editable in offline due to tech limitations but in principle that is how it is supposed to work.
Awesome, thanks for confirming. Looking forward to seeing how this develops!
I have a quick question on this. I signed up for the Alpha with a different email than my BBD email. Is there a way I can update mine or somehow sync it up so I can be a part of the alpha sooner? Essentially I signed up with my Primary personal email, whereas my Twitch/DDB email is my backup email address.
So I got the alpha.
I'm on a Pixel 2, Android 10 build QQ2A.200305.002, and I authenticate via twitch.
After I sign in all I am able to see is the twitch website, with a bar that says authenticate at top in the player app. I have no options or buttons but what exists as part of the twitch site.
Here is a link to a screenshot of what I see: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1QTPZS4Dd-2sotFWrZv0W1btmswWNtV_h
The email you provided during enrollment did not need to be the same that you used for DDB. It needed to be your Apple ID or your GMail account that you have configured on your phone (if it is Android). When you get the app, you can sign in to the app with your Twitch/Google account that you used for DDB. In short, the email you provided was to let you install the app, not sign in to it. Hope it is clear. If not, please let me know.
Thank you! Yes, we noticed this issue and will fix it for sure.
Ah, then yes, that is what I did. I used my Gmail account. That does help, thank you! Just wanted to make sure I didnt miss out on an invite because that email has nothing to do with my DDB account.
I noticed that while creating a character, if you go through all the options but do not click "View Character sheet" but instead click the character sheet icon it keeps you in the website interface. If you close this window you get a warning that you may lose your character data. If you say yes it then erases the character you created and it is not viewable. This happens even if you've chosen all options.
Edit: Clicking the "View Character Sheet" button opens the character sheet correctly within the app.
I had this same message but when closing out and trying to view the character they had been created properly with no missing parts
Thank you for all the hard work. I’ve been waiting for two years for this ever since I started playing dnd. I am currently running 4 campaigns and keep not only players in them but npc adventurers as well. I currently have 44 characters and will be adding more as I go. I know sorting is not a priority but having to go through my entire character list to find someone whose name starts with a z is kind of annoying. Just a minimal sort where you can change the alphabetical order of the names to z-a or grouping characters by campaign would be a big help to me. Thank you again. Your work is much appreciated.
My Bard is listed as lvl 4 on My Character screen despite being level 5.
He is correctly listed as level 5 when opening the character but returning to My character still list him as lvl 4
This may be a dumb question but are we allowed to put the app on multiple devices that we own? I have it on my iPad and have found no bugs thus far. (Use-value in its current state is another matter.) But I'd be curious to see and compare the differences between the iPad and iPhone.
My Homebrew Backgrounds | Feats | Magic Items | Monsters | Races | Subclasses
I can only second fishstiks101
Love what I've seen so far! The Darkmode ist great! My eyesight is impaired and it's such a relief to have the app in darkmode.
But at the same time - I love the red menu button, but could you circle it? If you (like me) have trouble with your vision (for various reasons - like retinopathy) you look out (pun intended) for familiar things. Circling it so it looks more the way it looks on the homepage if you open it on a mobile device, would make it easier to find.
And I would love to have the choice when it comes to abilities and modifiers, on which of them is shown on the bottom/top.
Other than that, I am very happy - this looks very promising!
keep up the good work and happy easter weekend :)
