Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I was wondering if it was possible to cast wall of fire with a opening in it? I was thinking about a battle tactic where a spell caster used wall of fire but left an opening for a fighter with a shield. They could use it to push back against an advancing hoard.
I would say no, because if there is a chunk missing it isn't a single wall anymore.
Also for what you described there would be no need for a fighter. The horde can just walk though the wall and completely avoid the fighter. In fact, the fighter would become the weak point of the wall. A place where they could get through without taking any damage if they piled up enough. If its a large enough horde they could easy overrun him regardless of the wall and just push through. But again, if the creatures are weak enough to die from the damage there is no point to having a hole, and if they are strong enough to survive the wall then they can just walk though it.
I don't see a situation where having an opening is beneficial in any way if the goal is to simply protect against a hoard of creatures.
You could make a ring shaped wall that wraps almost a full circle, and direct the flames outward.
It's a bit hard to think why you wouldn't just go ahead and close the gap, though. If they can survive going through the wall, they can bypass the fighter. And if they can't, then you're perfectly safe just fully surrounding the party.
If you need to leave, the caster can stop concentrating on the spell at will.
I suppose one reason to leave a gap open is so you can see through, which would allow you to do ranged attacks or spells that require sight of the target.
I could see why It'd be useful against a group up non-intelligent foes... A pack of wolves would probably never want to run through a wall of fire, but rather attack the man in the gap, which would potentially let you take them on one by one or something.
But yea, I don't think you can leave a gap.. I guess with a very nice dm they'd let you curve the wall into sort of a almost closed circle.. But that's not really RAW either, as I believe it's either a straight line or an enclosed circle... Hmm.. I think your best best is to put out part of the wall after it's been created.
