I really would like for the D&D team to re-evaluate how they decide hit die. Honestly by class type is kinda antiquated. Not all wizards are squishy, not all barbarians and fighters are dumb. Why not base it on your strength and dex modifiers? Eg 0-1 = d4, 2-3 =d6 4-5 = d8 5-6 d10 6+ =d12. Just a thought.
While the "not all Wizards are squishy" is valid, I'm not sure what "not all barbarians and fighters are dumb" has to do with hit dice. Hit dice and intelligence score are unrelated.
As for actually changing it, I feel it's unlikely WotC will do so. The class based hit dice system is a cornerstone of D&Ds mechanics and balance
If you want a wiz to be less squishy then invest in CON. If your CON is low then your wiz is spending all his time buried in books while the fighter is hitting the gym. Professions do link to physical strength, if you are lugging heavy armour, swinging heavy swords and working on conditioning then that will reflect in your stats.
I'd consider hit dice in D&D to be just another class feature. If you wanted to change this up, you would need a vast restructure and rebalance of all the class mechanics.
If wizards (for instance) are given the option to have a bigger hit dice, that enhances the class significantly, so they would either need to sacrifice something else, or give more to other classes.
Given that you already have the option to use ASIs etc to boost your CON to make up the difference, I think this is unnecessary. A fighter with 12 CON will (on average) have about the same HP as a Wizard with 16 CON, so you just have to be prepared to invest in other ability scores than you normally would to match (until a fighter gets to 18 CON, of course).
What, you mean you want this without making any sacrifices elsewhere?

Hit dice are tied to class because of their armor proficiencies and relative role in a party.
Fighters and Paladins get D10s because they can wear plate, Barbs get D12's because they do the same thing but can only go unarmored or medium armor.
Leather wearers all get D8s, and Sorcs and Wizards get D6s because they can't wear armor.
Features can obviously change this, but overall, the hit dice arbitrarily tie to armor class, to represent an overall "toughness" of a class of adventurer.
If you want your wizard to be tough, take CON, or take the Tough Feat. Making hit dice calculate based off an attribute just creates redundancy in scaling and overcomplicates a system that many players already don't understand fully.
Dayvd - "not all barbarians and fighters are dumb" has to do with hit dice. I was trying to make the point that you can be smart and strong. After reading comments, your probably right I'm trying "fix" something that already has a fix depending on how the dice roll and where you place the numbers. One of the things about 5e I enjoy is it makes the game a bit more streamlined. It combines the best of old school basic and 2nd E Advanced.

Aside from what everyone else already said, Dex really doesn't need to be made even more useful. Str could arguably use a bit of a buff, but that still wouldn't make it a good idea either. D&D is, for better or worse, a class-based system. Just my opinion, but it wouldn't feel like D&D if it weren't. Class defining characters most is as it should be.
