So now that after how many years of content came out with all the races and what not I was looking back at old subclasses and started wondering if "best" races have changed? Like for example a zealot scourge aasimar can do aoe radiant damage while harming enemies which btw the damage to yourself would keep you raging even if you are feared or what not keeping bonuses while harming the enemy and adding cool rp.
So my question is what kind of race/subclass combos do you think are best mechanically and/or fun rp wise these days? Would love to hear what other people think and have found!
RP wise, I've thought for a long time though that the Oath of the Ancients paladin has a good feel for half wood elves in particular. Taking the knight in shining armor often associated with human knights and adding in a druidic twist.
Warforged Battlemaster Fighter. They can have an impressive Armor Class thanks to their Integrated Protection, and fairly powerful Maneuvers to play with.
It's almost too obvious. Warforged - "Forged to be fighters in wars, and be the masters in battle."
If we're going with the newest options I want to make a Goblin Hexblood Spirits Bard witch. Just because I like the idea of a wizened goblin crone in a tent telling fortunes with a crystal ball.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
Owlfolk Swarmkeeper Ranger, surrounded by their own personal parliament of owls.
Warforged Hexblade Warlock to the Lord of Blades.
Kalashtar Undead Warlock whose bound Quori spirit is dying, and so they made a pact with them to form a symbiotic undead relationship. Form of Dread summons a spiritual quori avatar, and during Spirit Projection their spiritual body looks like a quori.

Mechanically, I wouldn't know really.

In terms of rp, I'm having a lot of fun building a Hexblood Fey Wanderer and, more fittingly, a Hexblood FeyLock.
Also, I've been playing a Reborn Hexblade that was literally brought back from the dead to perform tasks for his patron.
Kenku Eloquence Bard - wandering bard desperately trying to build a repertoire of others' works
Reborn Clockwork Soul Sorcerer - clockwork soul in a clockwork body
Kobold Shadow Monk - small outsider on the fringe of society finding strength and purpose through enlightenment
Those are some of the ones I'd be looking at, assuming the campaign would suit them.
Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
