So I'm just getting back into DnD, and I bought the starter set and the essentials set as I'm not ready to dive in head first. I was going to use Beyond for character making, but I read that it would be limited to the SRD content unless I bought the digital players handbook on Beyond. So I bought it relucantly and made a couple characters. Then my wife made an account to play with the character creator, and she had all the options contained in the Players Handbook...did I just buy the digital handbook for no reason?
I’m going to make the wild assumption that your wife and you share a computer. Or passwords. While yes you do have to buy anything beyond the SRD, once you do you can share that with people within your gaming group.

You can only share content if you have a master tier subscription.
to the OP: Unless your wife’s characters are in a campaign with content sharing turned on, she shouldn’t have access to anything not in the SRD but in the Platers handbook. Can you give some examples of what she has access to that you think she shouldn’t?

Basic Rules/SRD, EEPC, and active UA content are all free on Beyond. If you do not want to spend money, you can instead spend time using the homebrew tools and manually integrate the information from your physical books into Beyond.
Digital and physical products are separate, distinct products. Owning the physical Gloomhaven board game does not entitle anyone to get the digital version on Steam for free either. And this applies to everything from books, to music, to movies.

Make sure that you guys are actually using separate accounts. People often have account creation issues here because they did not pay attention to whether they signed up with Twitch or Google and accidentally creating multiple accounts on various devices, or more rarely in this case multiple people accidentally using the same account due to having a shared device. Have her sign in using her own device (her own phone, laptop, etc.) to make sure she is using her own account and she did not just accidentally log in to your account.
If she did not have an account before and she did not make any purchases on here, she should not have access to stuff in the PHB. The only way for her to access that content without paying for it is to have content sharing being turned on for her by someone who has subscription.
If you are just trying to share content between two accounts (you and your wife), I do not recommend getting the Master Tier subscription since it is not too difficult to just have her unclaim her character in a campaign, have you claim her character and make adjustments during level up, and then unclaim her character so she can claim it back.
