I apologize if this has been brought up on another thread, but I searched and couldn't find one. I'm thinking of purchasing the Monster Manual and am wondering the difference between the 19.99 and 29.99 versions. I have the physical book, but would like access to it on my laptop ( while flying or even during an online session). Thanks and take care.
More specifically, the less expensive option is a "Compendium only" version. That is, just a digital book you can read. In order to see the content in all the other tools of the site, you need to buy the "full" version.
I have a similar question about the prices of Monster Manual - there are 3 options: - the full book ($29.99), - the Compendium only ($19.99) - and also the '$19.99 for all 165 monsters' ('Get the 165 monsters from Monster Manual for use on D&D Beyond. You may also purchase individual monsters.').
As far as I’m concerned I do understand that buying something 'for use on D&D Beyond' adds it to your database and thus allows monster listing. So basically for the same price ($19.99) you can buy Compendium and the whole database of monsters. What is the difference between those two options? In the psychical book there is the whole 'Introduction' chapter and the two Appendixes (Misc creatures + NPC) but those Appendixes seem to be the part of the Basic Rules (e.g. monsters like Swarm of Insects and Thug are there). So the question - is this extra $10.00 the price for the Introduction chapter only? Which seems to be just the... 'Chapter 12: Monsters' from the Basic Rules? Am I missing a point?
There are lore element woven throughout the Monster Manual that do not appear in the monster listings, but only in the compendium. (For example, the box with info about Kin Obould Many-Arrows in the section on Orcs).
I'm thinking that it also might be the case that if one had only the monsters, you might not see the non-statblock lore in the listings. But I'm not certain and i can't test it, as I have the entire Monster Manual.
When I started needing things from the Monster Manual, I began by buying only the monsters I needed, until I reached the point that it made sense to buy the rest of the monsters bundle. I didn't pick up the compendium piece until there was a sale/discount code for full book purchases. Because it took into account what I had already spent, I think I picked up the compendium piece for around $3.00.

The $29.99 version makes the monsters show up in the the monsters listing. The $19.99 version doesn't.

Thank you for the reply Matthias.
