Hi Everyone-

I am new here so pardon if I did not post this question in the correct spot.  I looked around, but was still unsure if this was the correct spot. Anyway... I have started my first campaign with some friends.  We have played for a few weeks and my sheets are a mess so I came here to have my sheets nice and orderly....ish.  When I went to choose my background for my character, the option of "Outlander" was not there.  I did see the note that if your background is not there you can unlock more options in the Marketplace.  I already have a physical copy of the 5th Edition Player's Handbook.  Do I really have to purchase the digital version just so I can have the option to make sure my sheets are correct?

Yes, you will need to purchase the digital rights to things for use on D&D Beyond. However, if all you need is that one background you can purchase just that background - in the marketplace choose purchasing options by a book to see options for buying just the feats, or backgrounds or race either as a bundle or individually. If you ever decide to purchase the full book any previous things bought from it are taken out of the price.

You also could homebrew the background for personal use if you really don't want to pay anything.

Thank you, I went ahead and just bought what I needed.  It was only $4 compared to the $30.
