Charging more money for books with less of what I want in them. The double whammy of inflation combined with the deceptive shrinkflation all rolled into one. Interesting way to monetize an under-monetized IP.

This is more of a collection of questions regarding the changes and additions that Wizards of the Coast has made to 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons.
Questions such as.....
1. A.I. Art in new modules
2. New Classes and Races
3. The idea of ONE D&D as a whole
Also, this is an open opinion forum, so anything goes.
1. I really don’t care about AI art. Would prefer art made by real artists. But if AI assisted, as long as it’s noted I don’t care. But I think WotC said they are avoiding it in the future.
2. More options like races and (sub)Classes I like. Official classes, PHB+Artificer are fine. I don’t care about 3rd party ones (Blood Hunter, etc)
3. Yes I like 1D&D as a whole. wish it would do more but that doesn’t seem to be their intention.
The only AI art to appear did so because the artist inserted it and failed to notify WotC of the fact. WotC has made official statements saying they do not approve of AI art and expect artists they work with not to use it.
There are no new classes proposed. There are some new subclasses and updates to existing classes, if that’s what you mean by new. There are also no “new” races, instead some existing races are being promoted from supplemental material to the PHB. The one new race they tried out was scrapped.
I like what I’ve seen of 1D&D and I’m optimistic, but check back in September when we have actual rules, not playtests.
Charging more money for books with less of what I want in them. The double whammy of inflation combined with the deceptive shrinkflation all rolled into one. Interesting way to monetize an under-monetized IP.
The higher cost of the new books is below the rate of inflation, (comparing 2014 to 2024 PHB) and the 2024 PHB is going to be bigger than 2014, so it’s neither inflation nor shrinkflation.
Increased monetization of the IP has more to do with things like selling stuffed displacer beast toys than it does with book sales.
Not liking what’s going in there, of course, is a different thing, and I respect your opinion about that. I don’t share it, but I respect it.

That's something I think a lot of people misunderstood when they heard the under monetised comment from Hasbro, it's not "aaaargh we're not charging enough for our books" but instead more "Harley Davison are making a mint selling tshirts, baseball caps and key chains to people who don't even ride motorbikes so why aren't we?" They even said in the same shareholders meeting they want to see D&D as a lifestyle brand, not just a game people play but a huge part of their personal identity to the extent they buy non-game related products just to show off that they're D&D players. We've already seen them try to change that with a film, toys and board games releasing in the last year and considering Baldur's Gate 3 made orders of magnitude more money for them then the actual TTRPG this year I can't see that idea changing any time soon
The price increase was poorly timed. It was announced not long after Spelljammer which, to avoid repeated ad nauseum, I'll summarise as not their best work - while itself charging a premium. I don't think most people complaining about the price hike would be complaining half as much if it had been a stellar year. It was like that employee who just tipped over the shelving rack with a whole bunch of goods on it had then proceeded to demand a raise.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Interesting point on the book price increase; the MSRP of books for D&D fifth edition was a static $59.95 from 2014 until 2023, before increasing to $69.95. If we completely ignore the impact of events since 2020 on global supply chains (something that still hasn't stabilised and may never return to original trends), and just look at inflation since 2014, that same $59.95 would be $78.10.
So the MRSP increase is tracking at 10% below inflation.

Yeah, when they first announced it and I did the math, I thought if I was a PR flak, I’d try to spin it as a price cut.

1. Unintentional / remediated, and barely care either way.
2. Yes, I always use new races and (sub)classes. I made a Path of Giants barbarian just the other day. Feats have been more of a mixed bag but occasionally one sparks my interest.
3. Yes, I'm very much looking forward to the new books, especially regarding the underperforming 2014 subclasses that will be getting buffs like Berserker Barbarian and Trickery Cleric.
It's probably a good idea to do so, so you can get used to it when the changes come.
It stinks that the Monk will lose it's stunning every punch though.
I’m not so sure. I know there are those who liked it, the stunned condition is powerful and could trivialize a combat. But it was also seen as a trap to burn through Ki due to the CON save.
I think the once per turn was needed but would have liked additional options as part of this feature.
I like the new stun way better. It's never wasted because it does something useful even on a successful save now, and the DM doesn't have to worry about monk players going nova either.
I actually hate those. To me, it is like PC's are wondering around with their brains shut off, only comprehending one thing at a time and only on a successful skill check. They literally cannot think and chew gum at the same time.
Remember that action economy is for combat. Also remember that a skill check in combat always took an action. All it's really doing is giving an official name to something that was always a thing.
I really loved the proposed changes for the Search action, and the addition of the Study action.

If you can spot and understand something while a 7ft Barbarian is swinging an axe at you, then you don't need a skill check to do it and you shouldn't be rolling at all.
If you can't spot and understand something in the middle of a fight, then you need to sacrifice something in order to spot and understand it.
Now, I think perhaps an Action is a bit steep of a price...but if you're rolling...then it should come out of your action economy.

No, you can only focus on one thinking about one specific thing at a time, and only on a successful skill check. Like, when someone starts describing a movie and you have to stop and think about it for a moment to remember the title. Or quick, what’s the Pythagorean theorem? What’s the 18th letter of the alphabet? Took you a moment to think of the answers, didn’t it? That’s what those checks are for. The rest of the time you’re relying on your Passive Scores.
Now chewing, much like breathing and keeping your heart breathing doesn’t actually require active cognitive thought for the overwhelming majority of people. I don’t presume to speak for you, maybe you do need to focus specifically on chewing v breathing. Don’t want to do both at the same time lest one asphixiate, I understand that. Some things are certainly just more difficult for some folks than others. So if your experience is different than that’s something else entirely. I don’t judge. But chewing is not something I’ve ever had to actually put much thought into. 🤷♂️
Under the new system, you cannot notice a flaw in said barbarian's armor or even anything at all noteworthy about it unless it is literally completely obvious to all or you take time out from defending yourself to actively study it, despite your attention being on them.
Incorrect. You cannot ask for a skill check to notice something without spending an action, but the DM is free to give you information without a check.
2) I cannot see any DM who uses this system being the type who simply volunteers such information. Moreover, it means the DM is simply deciding what lore your character knows or does not
Which may well be done by checking your proficiencies. Skill checks are for things that are actually hard.
