I'm the group DM, how do I put my own character in the campaign?
This will enable me to pack the party out should it be necessary and if a player wants to have a go at DM ing (I'm hopeful I want to play occasionally) I can play the NPC as my own character.
DM PC’s are typically frowned upon. In many cases, at least from the stories you hear, is the DM’s character end up being the “main character”, problem solver (you know all the answers to riddles/puzzles), all around runs the show and not the players, etc
If you are dead set on a DM PC ( I know you called it an NPC), let the players control it.
I know you didn't ask about this, but I would be careful about playing DMPCs (or NPCPCs if you will) as it can be tricky. A few things to watch out for:
playing your character as knowing things they wouldn't (or couldn't possibly) know because as the DM you will obviously have all of that knowledge (this includes making decisions based on possible/probable outcomes even if your character themself didn't 'know about' upcoming events or unknowable details/events/probabilities)
stealing thunder or purpose from other players: even if unintentional, it might not take many enemy kills, successful skill checks at critical moments, healing spells at just the right moment, etc. for your players to feel as if you are somehow setting yourself up to succeed and/or potentially costing them their moment to shine
favoring your character(s) without realizing it (monsters attacking them less, other NPCs responding more favorably to them, etc.)
There are probably other potential pitfalls, but those are the ones that I can think of right of the top of my head. Just something to consider.
on my table myself and someone else both dm occasionally, the dm still controls their character and the charaters of absent players sometimes are controlled by the group. note, this doesn’t work for a consistent homebrew campaign. how to prevent stealing the players’s thunder, be very loose with what can be done by players and let the chaos unfold, that is often hilarious and means you can’t give yourself a bonus accidentally and players know that. if you aren’t even dmpc-ing but just have npc-s with classes stand-by and to fill the party(if they are part of the party, have them under their control, it gets funny), no problem at all.

If youre talking about a campaign here on DDB, I think you can just create a character, claim it and use it.
If you dont want the players to see it, you could create it outside of the campaign and use it.
Yes I want to use the characters (3) as NPC's in the campaign but I can't send myself the link
Just copy the link from the campaign page and then open it in your browser.

Yeah, this works.
Perhaps I should have been a bit more informative.
I run a group in a local pub and I'm never sure how many folk will turn up numbers range from 1 to 12 so far! I have several uses for the NPC s
1 plenty of folks turn up - guard the boats or horses
2 not enough folks turn up - pack the party out
3 new person turns up just wants to have a go - here choose a character
4 a player wants to have a go at DM ing I have a character to play
( I enjoy playing and DM ing I'm hoping someone will give me a night off occasionally and I can play)

Forgive me if this seems a dumb question, but I have to ask…. If you already have the link, why would you need to send it to yourself?
