Greetings. I'm an experienced DNDer from days of old, but not so experienced with 5e. I'm now working on my first character, and considering the available archetypes for the Rogue class. The Thief is described as gaining skill in reading unfamiliar languages, as did thieves in previous editions, but I don't see any such skill listed among the Thief's abilities in my printing of the PHB. Perhaps this is covered somewhere in the errata since? Thanks for clarifying.
No it is just the flavor text which does not match the features. It happens often.

You can argue how it might inform "use magic device" (like knowing how to decipher "front toward enemy" on a magic wand); but yes, the flavor text does not track with any actual feature in the class otherwise. It's kinda a shame as they were clearly trying to push into "Tomb Raider" territory from the flavor.
